Hurt Bay Meadows jockeys stable

Jockeys David Lopez and Alfredo Miranda were both listed in stable condition at Stanford Hospital on Friday after being injured in a seventh-race spill at Bay Meadows on Thursday.

Lopez, 22, is expected to remain hospitalized for another two or three days with a severe concussion after his mount, Perfect Judgment, apparently clipped heels and fell entering the turn.

Miranda, 29, had two broken ribs and four spinal fractures when Ghostly Smile fell after hitting the fallen Perfect Judgment. None of the fractures was displaced, and he was expected to be released from the hospital Thursday and friday.

It was the third concussion for Lopez since December.

"There is concern," said the Bay Meadows track physician, Dr. David Seftel. "We need to pay attention to his neurological status in the upcoming days and weeks."

Neither of the fallen horses was seriously injured.
