ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Hurricane Clair will be a big favorite to become the first filly to win the $400,000 Breeders’ Stakes since 2012 in the anchor leg of the Canadian Triple Crown on Sunday at Woodbine. This year’s King’s Plate, the opening leg of the series, was won by the filly Caitlinhergrtness. Hurricane Clair, trained by Marty Drexler, competed in all three legs of the Canadian Triple Tiara, a lucrative series for Canadian-bred 3-year-old fillies. After ending up third in the Woodbine Oaks and a distant second to Stormcast in the Bison City Stakes, she upset Stormcast in the 1 1/4-mile Wonder Where Stakes on the turf. Sahin Civaci was aboard for the Wonder Where and will ride her again Sunday for owner David Rowbotham and partners. “I thought she looked really comfortable the whole way,” Drexler said. “The way she was ranging up to Stormcast – she was doing it like a good horse. She hasn’t taken a bad step since and she came out of her [Sept. 21] breeze good. I wanted to give her an extra day, rather than breeze her seven days out. After the quicker breeze, I trained her pretty light. I didn’t need to do a whole lot with her.” :: Subscribe to the DRF Post Time Email Newsletter: Get the news you need to play today's races!  Drexler said he anticipates another peak performance from the daughter of Silent Name, who stretches out to 1 1/2 miles in the Breeders’. “There’s nothing that tells me that she’s not going to run a good race,” Drexler said. “She’s been scoping clean every time and she’s sound. She hasn’t missed an oat all year. I actually think she’s bulked up and muscled up. “Sometimes, with a campaign like this, they can get skinny and looking a little used up, but she’s managed to put weight on, even though she’s a bit light-framed. I supplement her with all kinds of different things to try to keep the weight on, and she eats everything.” Drexler has few reservations regarding the marathon distance or the course condition for Hurricane Clair. “It looks like she’ll get the distance,” Drexler said. “She should be very close to the lead, and it seems like she’ll go forever. If she makes the lead, even better – she’ll relax a little bit. The ground will probably be on the softer side, which she likes.” Ten fillies have won the Breeders’ since 1970 – Mary of Scotland, Belle Geste, Momigi, Bounding Away, Hangin On a Star, Dance Smartly, Pinafore Park, Free Vacation, Sweetest Thing, and, most recently, Irish Mission in 2012. Trainer Kevin Attard sends out Jokestar and King Rosso in the 134th running of the historic race for owners Al and Bill Ulwelling. Jokestar finished fifth in both the Plate Trial and King’s Plate before a lackluster performance in the Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie. “He didn’t take to the dirt last time out in the Prince of Wales, but I thought he had a solid effort in the Plate,” Attard said. “The distance certainly won’t be an issue, and I think he will appreciate the long stretch in the Breeders’.” King Rosso is one of four maidens in the seven-horse lineup. He was second two starts back on the Tapeta before ending up third in a 1 1/4-mile maiden special on the grass. “I thought his last two efforts were very good,” Attard said. “He’s been a little unfortunate when it comes to getting on the turf this year. Three of his races were moved to the main track, so the hope is he can build off that last race and move forward from it.” :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Side Street beat out King Rosso for second while dropping a nose decision Sept. 2. Roscar is coming off a troubled third against older allowance rivals traveling 1 1/4 miles on the main turf. Rounding out the field is the maiden Thor’s Cause, who’s making his first start since finishing seventh in the King’s Plate on Aug. 23. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
