ELMONT, N.Y. - It was more of a quiz than a test, but the 2-year-old colt Hullabaloo Ray Ray passed with high marks on Sunday, winning a one-mile allowance by 9 1/2 lengths at Belmont Park, likely earning a start in the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes here in four weeks.
Under Jose Lezcano, Hullabaloo Ray Ray sat second off the pacesetting Its Saturday Night, took over turning for home and drew off impressively to win as the 1-9 favorite. There were only three rivals in the field, but the margin of victory and the final time of 1:35.45 for the mile was visually impressive. It was another 9 1/2 lengths back to the third-place finisher.
It was the second straight win for Hullabaloo Ray Ray after he finished second to Dargham in his debut at Saratoga. Hullabaloo Ray Ray, a son of Jackie’s Warrior, is owned by Glen Hill Farm and trained by Tom Proctor.
“He’s doing everything right when I thought he never did anything right as a kid, so that’s kind of nice,” Proctor said. “It was a good race.”
Proctor said he would definitely take a look at the Grade 2, $250,000 Remsen, at one-turn and at 1 1/8 miles here on Dec. 5, for Hullabaloo Ray.
“You have to,” he said.
