Hulkewicz gets back in game after four-year hiatus
Dave Hulkewicz is getting ready to return from a four-year layoff.
Hulkewicz, an owner who lives in Dallas, has been shopping for racing-age horses at Del Mar and said Monday during an auction at Lone Star Park that he would like to be active during the Oaklawn Park meet that opens in January.
“I just wanted to take a hiatus for a little bit, and I’m getting ready to get back in it,” he said.
Hulkewicz won Oaklawn’s biggest race for sprinters, the Count Fleet Sprint Handicap, in 2003 with Beau’s Town. The horse also won that year’s Grade 2 Bing Crosby at Del Mar. Other stakes winners raced by Hulkewicz have included One Eyed Joker and Beverly Greedy. Through the years, Hulkewicz also has partnered on a number of quality runners.
The owner said he has no specific plans for the stable, other than that if he buys in California, the horse likely would race in that state, and if he buys in Arkansas, the horse would race at Oaklawn.
“I’ll let the animals give me the plan,” he said.
