Horseshoe Indianapolis in Shelbyville, Ind., has moved Wednesday’s card of 10 races to Monday, July 6, because heat index figures are projected to top 104 degrees, according to a press release from the track. First post for the Monday card will be 2:10 p.m. Eastern.
“We are constantly monitoring weather conditions that could be unsafe for our participants, and after talking with our horsemen from both Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse [stables], we collectively feel it’s in the best interest of our team members, horsemen, and horses to move our Wednesday program to Monday,” Eric Halstrom, vice president and general manager of Horseshoe Indianapolis, said in a press release. “We know it's important to our horsemen not to lose racing opportunities, so this move will ensure safer weather conditions for everyone involved, especially those who work outdoors during our racing program.”
Horseshoe Indianapolis plans to resume racing on Thursday but is closely monitoring the forecast. A decision on any potential cancellation would be made closer to Thursday, according to the release. The forecast is not as severe for that day.
Entries for the Indiana Derby close Monday.
In another heat-related shuffle, Belterra Park near Cincinnati has canceled racing on July 1 and 2 and rescheduled races carded for those days for new dates on July 5 and 7.
