Horses to watch on Night 2 of Fasig-Tipton Saratoga selected yearlings sale

Barbara D. Livingston Stop the Press, an Uncle Mo colt out of Secret Sigh, sells for $1.5 million to top the first session of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga selected yearlings sale.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The boutique Fasig-Tipton Saratoga selected yearling sale, which got off to a smashing start Monday night, concludes with its second and final session Tuesday evening, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Monday’s opening session posted double-digit gains in the gross receipts, average price, and median price, and had an improved buyback rate. Four seven-figure horses, as many as were sold in the entire 2021 sale, led the way.

As good as the activity was at the top of the marketplace, Tuesday’s session may have shaken out a bit stronger, with the catalog order based alphabetically by broodmare names.

"Great start, and can't wait for” Tuesday, Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning Jr. said. "A lot of folks have said they think [Tuesday] night might even be a little stronger, in terms of the quality of horses."

Additionally, there is a common perception that the second day of a sale can be stronger than the first, once the market is ‘warmed up’ and momentum has been established.

Following are some of the horses to watch in Tuesday’s session, largely based on their pages and the market trends seen as the sale began. The selections reflect catalog updates and sale outs through Monday.

Hip No. 126, filly by Curlin – America, by A.P. Indy. Consigned by Stone Farm, agent.
Out of Grade 3 winner and Grade 1-placed America, this is a full sister to multiple graded stakes winner First Captain, who sold for $1.5 million to top this sale in 2019 – to West Point Thoroughbreds, which was active at the top of the marketplace Monday night. America is from the extended family of Kentucky Oaks winner and blue hen Blush With Pride, a half-sister to another prominent producer in Minnie Hauk. This is the family of Better Than Honour, dam of Belmont Stakes winners Rags to Riches and Jazil, among other accomplished runners. Fillies from this family are highly sought after for their residual value. Curlin had a strong start to the sale on Monday, with three yearlings sold for an average price of $783,333.

Hip No. 127, colt by Curlin – Angela Renee, by Bernardini. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales, agent.
Grade 1 winner Angela Renee’s first runner is Grade 3-placed Gilded Age. The young broodmare is a full sister to multiple Grade 1 winner To Honor and Serve, and this is the family of Grade 1 winner and Canadian champion Rahy’s Attorney and Grade 1 winner Mozu Ascot. Bernardini has emerged as an outstanding broodmare sire and is a son of A.P. Indy, continuing a successful line cross with Curlin. An Uncle Mo colt from this immediate family led the session Monday night, selling for $1.5 million to West Point.

Hip No. 134, colt by Tapit – Bar of Gold, by Medaglia d'Oro. Consigned by Sequel New York, agent for Chester and Mary Broman.
Millionaire Bar of Gold was a multiple stakes winner on both dirt and turf, highlighted by the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. Her first foal, a full brother to this colt, is Grade 3 winner Coinage. The Bromans, breeders of this year’s most expensive 2-year-old, elected to enter this colt in “open company” in the selected sale, rather than letting him be a big fish in next week’s New York-bred yearling sale. They could be hoping for a windfall.

Hip No. 150, filly by Into Mischief – Paola Queen, by Flatter. Consigned by Gainesway, agent.
This is a full sister to last year’s $2.6 million sale-topping colt. While not yet named, the colt has been working steadily for the Coolmore group in Saratoga, most recently posting a bullet work from the gate. Into Mischief, the nation’s three-time reigning leading sire and closing in on this year’s lead, had a monster session Monday night, recording two of the four seven-figure horses and finishing with an average price of $680,000.

Hip No. 194, colt by Justify – Funfair, by More Than Ready. Consigned by Paramount Sales, agent
Triple Crown winner Justify has emerged among this year’s leading freshman sires, with Grade/Group 2 winners Just Cindy and Statuette already to his credit. His continued popularity was seen Monday, with the Coolmore group, which stands him, stepping up to $1.1 million for a colt in support of their young sire. This colt, out of a stakes-winning mare, is a half-brother to Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint winner Four Wheel Drive and stakes winner Born Great. The latter is by Scat Daddy, the sire of Justify.

Hip No. 207, colt by Into Mischief – Indian Miss, by Indian Charlie. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales, agent.
An undoubted highlight of this auction, this is the definition of breeding the best to the best and hoping for the best, as he is by the nation’s reigning leading sire and out of the reigning Broodmare of the Year. Indian Miss is the dam of Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner and Eclipse Award champion Mitole and classic-placed Grade 1 winner Hot Rod Charlie.
