Doctor Oscar established himself as the fastest horse on the grounds last season at Canterbury Park by putting up the meet’s three highest Beyer Speed Figures. He returns to Minnesota on Saturday for the 10,000 Lakes, one of two $50,000 stakes on the card. The Lady Slipper is for fillies and mares. Both races are at six furlongs and restricted to 3-year-olds and up bred in Minnesota. Doctor Oscar won last year’s 10,000 Lakes with a Beyer of 95, which was the third-highest number of the season. He proceeded to win an allowance with a 102 Beyer, before adding the Minnesota Sprint Championship with a 98 in a performance that clinched the horse of the meet title. For his return home after wintering at Tampa Bay Downs, Doctor Oscar starts from the rail under regular rider Alonso Quinonez. The strategy is simple Saturday. “He wants to go to the front,” trainer Tim Padilla said. “He wants to go to the front, for sure. “The post is all right. It’s easier when you’ve got all that kind of speed to be on the outside, when you don’t have to send so hard. But when you’re on the inside, you’ve got to send to make sure they don’t cut over on you.” :: Subscribe to the DRF Post Time Email Newsletter: Get the news you need to play today's races!  Thealligatorhunter, another multiple stakes winner trained by Padilla, is the chief threat to Doctor Oscar. “He’s on his game right now,” Padilla said. “He ran a heck of a race opening weekend. He tries every time, gives 100 percent.” Thealligatorhunter could get a tracking trip off Doctor Oscar when he starts from post 4 in the field of six. Constantino Roman has the mount for Padilla, who also bred and co-owns Thealligatorhunter in partnership with Pete Mattson. Mattson is the breeder and owner of Doctor Oscar. Mattson and Padilla have Thealligatorhunter’s half-sister, the multiple stakes winner She’s My Warrior, in the Lady Slipper. She is moving back into the statebred ranks after racing against open company all winter at Tampa Bay Downs. “She’s a Minnesota-bred. It makes a big difference,” Padilla said. She’s My Warrior, a 5-year-old by Warrior’s Reward, and Thealligatorhunter, a 6-year-old by Overanalyze, are out of the mare Garden Gloves. “They’re very relaxed,” Padilla said. “Those two are very laid back. Thealligatorhunter is one of those horses that rests all the time. He doesn’t get aggressive about anything, besides racing.” The field of six for the Lady Slipper is led by Thunders Rocknroll. Mattson and Padilla have a third half-sibling out of Garden Gloves running on the card Saturday in Crocodilehunter. He is a 4-year-old colt by Palace and he goes in the seventh race, an allowance sprint. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! He should show some speed.” Padilla decided on reptile-inspired names for two of the foals from Garden Gloves. “I started living down in Florida and dreamed up the names,” he quipped. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
