Horse of the day for 7/20

Dan Illman|Jul 19, 2007

Race 7 - Del Mar
5 1/2 Furlongs (Polytrack)
California Thoroughbred Breeders' Association Stakes
2-year-old fillies (California-bred)
Purse $125,000.

TREADMILL was very impressive winning her debut, then finished a solid second in her first start against winners in the Landaluce. Bet to favoritism for her coming-out party, she was rated off a three-ply duel only to soon advance on the leaders on the turn while under a good hold. She drew away in the lane while only being shown the whip, and galloped out nicely after the fact. In the Landaluce, she was stuck in behind horses while down on the rail on the turn, but rallied nicely when clear in the stretch. She doesn't need the lead to be successful, and should get a hot pace to attack when the real running begins.
I DIG HER draws a tough outside post position, and may have to assume rating tactics for the first time in her career on Friday. She earned an excellent Beyer Speed Figure winning her maiden over this distance, and trainer Art Sherman is an underrated source for high-percentage performers. BILLIE BOB may have been a bit short in her first start off the bench in the Landaluce, and should be among the leaders going into the turn. She earned a big fig two back, and trainer Wesley Ward excels with young horses. ONE HOT WISH broke the world record for 4 1/2 furlongs for Ward at Keeneland, but she failed to sell at 300K five days later at public auction. She has high early speed, and may be the one to ultimately catch. EXPECT VALKYR overcame pace pressure to win her maiden, but figures to be under the gun from her inside post.
Like the top selection, DEBATING SOCIETY rallied off the pace to graduate. She did so against maiden claimers, but draws nicely outside the speeds, and will be running late.

Selections:
1. Treadmill
2. I Dig Her
3. Billie Bob

The play: Treadmill to win at 2-1 or more.

YTD record based on starts, wins, top pick in the money, and profit/loss of that day's play: 58-11-24 (+$48.60)
