Horse of the day for 6/8

Dan Illman|Jun 07, 2007

Churchill Downs - Race 11
5 1/2 Furlongs
Maiden Special Weight
3-year-olds and upward. fillies and mares
Purse $48,000.

Let's take a chance with FULL SECRET, a daughter of Brazilian Group 1 winner Top Size (won debut on dirt at 5 1/2 furlongs). The dam is a half-sister to Hard Buck, a Grade/Group 1 winner on turf in both Brazil and the United States (won Gulfstream Park Breeders' Cup Handicap). Trainer Paul McGee has acceptable statistics with first-time starters (sent out 19-1 longshot firster Dubious Miss last fall at Churchill), and the May 9 workout matches up with McGee's 5-year-old Road Show (94 Beyer top on dirt). Full Secret should offer value in this spot, and is worth a shot at a price.
LA TRAVIATA is the first foal out of a half to Group 3 winner (United Arab Emirates) Jack Sullivan, and she cost seven figures at auction last year after breezing one furlong in 10.20 seconds. She originally sold for $75,000 as a weanling, and for $112,000 as a yearling so she obviously caught the eye at the breeze-up sale. Her last two published workouts match up with Pat Biancone's His Majesty (87 Beyer Speed Figure, entered earlier in the day at Churchill). POLA'S PLACE showed good speed chasing favored winner Star of Luvina in her career debut, but she's stuck on the also-eligible list, and the half to stakes-placed Bola Soup (14-2-3-0, $78,375), and multiple stakes-winner Going Wild (23-4-4-3, $324,580) is unlikely to start. TIZ HOLLY showed improved speed in her first start of the year, and she may be sharper with that race under her girth. She'll likely be a pace factor, but has yet to gain ground from the stretch call to the wire. CAUSEWAY LADY debuts for dangerous connections, and she's the first foal from multiple Grade 2 winner Mystic Lady (27-10-8-2, $1,170,390). She draws the rail, however, and the inside can be an intimidating place for inexperienced runners.
ROYAL G G is a half to multiple stakes-placed sprinter White She Devil (18-5-3-4, $135,170), but she will have to hustle to get a good forward position from her outside post position.

Selections:
1. Full Secret
2. La Traviata
3. Pola's Place

The play: Full Secret to win and place (6-1 odds or higher)

YTD record based on starts, wins, top pick in the money, and profit/loss of that day's selection: 44-8-17 (+$62.40)
