Horse of the day for 4/5

Dan Illman|Apr 04, 2007

Santa Anita - Race 8
6 Furlongs
Maiden Claiming ($32,000-$28,000)
3-year-old fillies
Purse $20,000.

GOLD CENTS took a good deal of mutuel support for her career debut at Hollywood last year, and she finished evenly behind a runaway winner. She didn't do much with a ground-saving trip last time, but that was her first start in eight months, and it's possible that trainer Juan Garcia didn't have his charge fully cranked that day. Expect her to be sharper with that return run under her belt, and she adds blinkers and a capable apprentice rider for Thursday's finale.
MIZ PARADIS will make her first start for high-percentage trainer Scott Craigmyle after being conditioned by Christopher O'Dell for her first seven starts (trainer change not noted in the pp's due to those mixed breed lines), and she earned solid Beyer Speed Figures at this level last year. She should be a forward factor, and she finished fourth in a key race the last time she tried this surface. SKIMMINTHERAIL finished ahead of several of these, including the top pick, when a rallying runner-up two starts back. She failed to stay despite adding Lasix last time out, however, and must avoid a wide trip from the far outside post. DATE WITH ANNA adds Lasix for the second lifetime start, and that is often a huge angle in maiden races. She missed the break in her debut, but passed a few horses late, and should show normal improvement here.
RUTHIE'S GIRL was very green in her career debut against maiden special weights at Bay Meadows, and she may focus better on the task at hand with the addition of blinkers. She's been working steadily since late January, but this will be her first start since May. TRIBAL LADY needn't be the next coming of Ruffian to win this race, and she shows some quick works for her debut. The sire is only 1-28 with previous firsters, however. CANDYGRAM had a very difficult trip in her first start of the year, and she was claimed out of the race by the always-dangerous Sadler barn. She ran well in her debut, and will show good speed given an alert break.

The selection: Gold Cents to win and place (6-1 or more)
