Horse of the day for 3/15

Dan Illman|Mar 15, 2007

Race 5 - Fair Grounds
About 5 1/2 Furlongs (Turf)
Maiden Special Weight
3-year-old fillies
Purse $46,500.

MOLLY BY GOLLY has shown Beyer improvement in each start to date, and she put away another pace challenger en route to a runner-up finish at this level and distance last time out. That race compared favorably to a 'N3X' allowance for fillies and mares at About 5 1/2 Furlongs on the turf later in the day (1:04.79 to 1:05.49), and Molly by Golly may have gotten the job done if not for switching back to her wrong lead for a few strides in midstretch. She'll receive blinkers for the first time on Thursday, and the new equipment may help her keep her mind on her business in the stretch. The half-sister to Grade 3 sprint winner Meadow Gem should be right there when they swing into the stretch.
HIDDEN GROVE steadied when in between rivals in late stretch when the beaten favorite last time out, but she probably wasn't going to outfinish the winner in the stretch. She has the tactical speed to sit a nice stalking trip off the speeds while in the clear, and owns the Beyer advantage over her rivals. PINEAPPLE EXPRESS improved her Beyer 15 points in her turf debut, but she faltered late behind Hidden Grove and FAROLITO that day, and may face more early pressure in this spot. Farolito's best race came on the grass so you may want to toss out her subpar performance on the main track last time out. She is another with tactical speed that would benefit from a hot pace up front.
ACADIANA is the first foal from Amelia, a turf stakes-winning mare from an excellent family. She faltered in her only previous turf outing, but should do well turning back in distance. CLASS QUEEN was sandwiched by a pair of next-out winners in a promising career debut on dirt at Oaklawn. She draws widest here, but the barn excels with young runners.

The selection: Molly by Golly to win (3-1 or more)

YTD record based on starts, wins, top pick in the money, and profit/loss of that day's selection: 22-3-8, +$41.00
