Horse of the day for 1/5

Dan Illman|Jan 07, 2007

Gulfstream Park - Race 5
1 1/16 Miles (Turf)
Maiden Special Weight
3-year-old fillies
Purse $44,000

SWEET SMILE chased subsequent Grade 3 Tempted winner Successful Outlook in her debut, then showed improved speed in the initial route try before faltering badly. A 250K 'RNA' last year, she is by solid grass sire El Prado, and trainer Bill Mott sent out first-time turfer Vanquisher to a maiden score here on opening day. Sweet Smile has been working quickly at Gulfstream, and the December 18 drill matches up with Mott's Kent Breeders' Cup (Grade 3 turf) winner Seeking Slew. Her dam was Grade 3-placed on the main track so there's some class on the bottom of the pedigree as well. Sweet Smile is eligible to wake up at a price at Gulfstream on Friday. PASTEL GAL and ROCKVILLE MANOR both boast strong turf bloodlines. The former is a half to multiple stakes-winner Lyracist (12 wins in dirt routes, 589K in earnings) by 16% first-turf sire Lemon Drop Kid while Rockville Manor is a half to a pair of grass winners. Rockville Manor's dam was a stakes-winner on turf, and the young sire sent out some live grass runners in his first crop. LE CHATEAU is extremely logical after giving a good effort against winners in the Caressing Handicap at Churchill Downs. She should save valuable ground breaking from an inside post position. PROMINENT shows solid works for debut, and is a half to a first-turf winner. The gray filly must break from a tough outside post if she draws in from the also-eligible list. QUIET ALICE didn't do much in career debut on dirt, but she did finish ahead of a next-out winner, and her turf workouts at Palm Meadows are interesting. DATTTS AWESOME had trouble in her career debut - a race that produced three next-out winners - and she may have moved prematurely in her most recent effort. She must avoid another wide trip from outside post. LIME TIME never got a breather in her debut, and should be up on the lead once again.

The Play: Sweet Smile to win and place (8/1 or more)
