NEW ORLEANS – On turf, Same As appears well spotted in the featured second-level optional $40,000 claiming race for 4-year-olds and up Sunday at Fair Grounds. But if recent wet weather forces a surface switch to dirt, Hazards of Love, entered for the main track only, appears to be the horse to beat. The race, the ninth on an 11-race card, will be run at about 1 1/16 miles on turf or at the exact distance on dirt. The field comprises 11 runners in the body of the race plus the also-eligible Hazards of Love. Same As, a 5-year-old who has made only six starts, is coming off a sixth-place finish, 3 1/2 lengths behind winner Chocolate Ride, in the Grade 3 Fair Grounds Handicap on Feb. 20. Two starts back, Same As closed strongly to win a first-level allowance race on this course. “The two-other-than is a logical spot for Same As,” trainer Jeff Engler said. He said he wants to get another race into Same As before going to Keeneland, where a possible target for Same As is the 1 1/2-mile Elkhorn on April 23. It’s possible that Same As will skip Sunday’s race and run in the Grade 2 Mervin Muniz on March 26, Engler said. Also, he said, there’s a “99 percent probability” that Same As won’t run Sunday if the race is switched to dirt. Another solid contender on turf would be Hammers Terror, a Mike Maker trainee who invaded from Florida and won at this level and distance Feb. 20 with a sharp rally. Hammers Terror, who will be making his second start after a four-month break, will be running for the $40,000 claiming price, as he did in his previous race. On dirt, Hazards of Love has won 26 of 61 starts. A 9-year-old gelding trained by Tom Amoss, Hazards of Love is a consistent money maker. He has finished in the money in 11 of 15 starts on the main track at Fair Grounds. He’s entered for the claiming price. The last time he raced for a tag ($62,500), he won at 1 1/8 miles in second-level optional-claiming company last fall at Churchill Downs.
