Closing weekend at Saratoga was a family affair that left Spendthrift Farm feeling hopeful for the future. The farm swept the track’s historic Grade 1 races for 2-year-olds with a pair by the farm’s leading sire Into Mischief, Tommy Jo and Ted Noffey. Both juveniles are named for members of the Spendthrift family. On Saturday, Tommy Jo struck first, rolling by 6 1/2 lengths in the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes for fillies. That followed a 3 3/4-length victory in her July 26 debut. The filly, out of the graded stakes-placed Pioneerof the Nile mare Mother Mother, races as a homebred for Spendthrift. “She ran great and is a homebred, which is extra exciting for us, that she was raised on the farm and every division on the farm had a hand in getting her here,” Spendthrift owner and president Eric Gustavson said. “It was a big team win and we preach a ‘we, not me’ mentality at the farm first, so that’s a big deal for us. “And she is named after our only granddaughter as well, so that is like the cherry on top of it all. Her name is Tommy Jo Gustavson.” :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. On Monday’s closing day card, Ted Noffey completed the double with an 8 1/2-length tour de force in the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes – which, coincidentally, the farm sponsored. The colt, who like Tommy Jo is trained by Todd Pletcher, won a maiden race on Aug. 2. Ted Noffey, out of the graded stakes-placed Old Fashioned mare Streak of Luck, was bred by Aaron and Marie Jones. Spendthrift purchased him for $650,000 as a Keeneland September yearling. Ted Noffey is named for Spendthrift general manager Ned Toffey – sort of. After Toffey’s name was misspelled on social media, Toffey’s daughter Megan called the typo to the attention of Gustavson, who playfully attached the name to the colt. “My first goal was just let him be faster than me, and he’s definitely accomplished that,” Toffey joked. “He’s really a nice horse.” Tommy Jo and Ted Noffey became the 26th and 27th individual Grade 1 winners, respectively, for sire Into Mischief, who is well on his way to his seventh consecutive North American leading sire title. Through Sept. 1, his progeny have earned $22,418,675 this season, according to Daily Racing Form statistics. His closest pursuer, Gun Runner, is at $12,715,811. Into Mischief is led this season by Sovereignty, the first horse in 30 years to win the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, and Travers Stakes. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
