Hoosier: Sophomores meet up in Pegasus events
Three-year-olds of both sexes and gaits were in action in divisions of the Pegasus on Friday night at Hoosier Park.
The pacing males were separated into two $36,750 splits, and the wins would go to Always A Prince (Trace Tetrick) in 1:51 3/5 and Wheels On Fire (Ronnie Wrenn Jr.) in 1:51. Always A Prince, the Indiana Sires Stakes champion for the division, scored his 18th win from 21 starts this year. He is trained by Tyler George for owners Carl and Melanie Atley. Wheels On Fire, trained by Ron Burke for owner/breeder W.J. Donovan, is now a ten-time winner.
Male trotters raced in two sections worth $42,900 and $42,600. Ohio Breeders Championship winner Mission Accepted took the first of those dashes in 1:54 4/5 for driver Chris Page, co-owner/trainer Jeff Conger, co-owner/breeder Knox Services Inc. and David Wills, and Got The Groove, who was third in the Indiana Sires Stakes Super Final, won the other test in 1:55 1/5 for co-owner/trainer/driver John De Long and co-owner Jesse De Long.
Twenty-two filly pacers were divided up into a couple $34,050 events, and both saw upsets. Aldine Hanover, sent off at 10-1, bagged the first flight in 1:52 4/5 for driver John De Long, trainer Erv Miller, and owners Ervin Miller Stable Inc., Glenn Bechtel, and Lou Willinger, and Always Woggy, dispatched at 20-1, came out of the pocket to win the other Pegasus tilt in 1:53 for driver Ricky Macomber Jr., trainer Shane Bowermaster of the Brian Brown stable, and owner/breeder Emerald Highlands Farm.
Rounding out the action were a trio of clashes for filly trotters. The opening $26,800 division went to Lass A Rope in 1:56 for driver Sam Widger, trainer Ernie Gaskin, and owner/breeder Robert Key, Indiana Sires Stakes Super Final winner Custom Cantab (Wrenn Jr.) won the middle contest in 1:54 4/5 for co-owner/trainer Chris Beaver and co-owners Donald Robinson and R.B.H. Ventures Inc., and Rose Run Swan completed the winners, stopping the clock in 1:56 for co-owner/trainer/driver Lewayne Miller and co-owners Last Chance Racing Stable and C11 Racing.
