Hoosier Park track report

Last Saturday's 10th edition of the Indiana Derby drew 6,839 fans to Hoosier Park, the fourth-highest crowd for a derby and eighth overall for Thoroughbred or Standardbred attendance in the track's 11-year history.

Ontrack wagering on the live card was $286,918, compared with $264,031 a year ago. Overall handle was off a bit. The combined total of $2,032,911 on this year's card fell short of last year's $2,162,212.

* While the derby was the focal point of the weekend, claiming horses made their own history on Saturday with the debut of a new Hoosier Park distance in the Claiming Marathon Series. The series distance increases through the season, with Saturday's 1 1/8-mile race the first ever run at that distance over this seven-furlong oval.

Henbane's Cat, trained by Ron Powell, claimed a three-quarter-length victory in 1:54.47 to establish the track record for the distance. The series has a bottom claiming price of $4,000, and horses are entered carrying an additional two pounds for each $500 added to the minimum claiming price. Henbane's Cat, in for a tag of $6,000, carried 118 pounds with rider J.J. Delgado aboard for the victory.

* Leading trainer Ralph Martinez saddled three winners on Thursday's card to again equal the mark for most wins on a single card by a trainer. Martinez equaled the mark four times last year, and shares the record with nine other trainers.

* Jockey Tommy Pompell scored a four-bagger on Friday night's Indiana Oaks card to crack the top 10 in the rider standings. Pompell was third in the rider standings last season.
