Hoosier: Cattle Kate seeks third straight win

Bill Hodtwalker|Oct 01, 2003

ANDERSON, Ind. - A pair of stakes for Indiana-bred fillies are the supporting features on the Indiana Breeders' Cup Oaks undercard. The Vincennes Stakes brings together 3-year-old fillies, and the City of Anderson Stakes matches 2-year-old fillies.

Cattle Kate, seeking her third straight victory at the meet, heads a field of 12 in the six-furlong Vincennes Stakes. Trained by Gary Patrick, Cattle Kate defeated open one-other-than allowance company in her last start. She has the rail and leading rider Orlando Mojica aboard.

Miss Dakota returns to her home state off a fourth over the Belmont Park turf course in her last start, for a $40,000 claiming tag. Winner of the Terre Haute Stakes here last year, she has a lifetime mark of 4-3-1 from 14 starts, and looms the biggest threat to Cattle Kate. Beth Butler rides for trainer Mike Lauer from post 6.

The City of Anderson, at 5 1/2 furlongs, also drew a full field of 12, including three entries.

Victory Punch, a maiden winner on Sept. 17, rates a slight edge in an evenly matched field. She is coupled in the wagering with Belmont Harbor, for trainer Robert Zahl. Lester Knight is named on both halves of the entry.

Sterling Slipper, part of another entry with Jst Befor Valntine for trainer Richard Kohnhort, came up less than a length short of Victory Punch last time out. Orlando Mojica rides Sterling Slipper, while Corey Lanerie is on Jst Befor Valntine.

Tony Schuler sends out yet another entry: comprised of Tee's Pearl and X to the Tee. Tee's Pearl will make her Indiana debut off a third against "other than" allowance company at Turfway Park. Dean Butler is named to ride, while Fabio Arguello will be aboard X to the Tee.
