Hong Kong: Will Power must carry the weight in Sha Tin handicap

A week away from the Hong Kong International Races, the Sunday feature at Sha Tin will look nothing like those Group 1 turf races as a field of a dozen Class 2 handicappers take to the dirt oval situated inside the main turf course in the last of 10 races.

Will Power, top rated at 95, has to tote high weight of 132 pounds but could well be up to the task, with his course and distance Class 3 win two starts back having come under a 133-pound impost. Trained by Douglas Whyte and with Karis Teetan to ride, Will Power has turned into a force over the Sha Tin dirt track, winning both his starts on the surface this season and five of eight overall. He was fifth on a wet-sealed surface to end his 2019-2020 campaign, but Sunday’s forecast calls for clear skies and a high in the low 70s.
Winner Supreme also brings proven competitive dirt form at the class level to this start, and figures to go to the front under five-pound apprentice jockey Victor Wong. Red Desert, twice a winner over the Sha Tin dirt last season, makes his second start after a layoff and could get first run on Will Power.
The card starts at 1 a.m. Eastern. DRFBets.com has live video and wagering.
