Hong Kong: JetWings tops France Galop Cup

Steve Andersen|May 15, 2017

Soundness issues have prevented JetWings from a full campaign in Hong Kong in recent months. When JetWings does appear in the entries, the 5-year-old commands attention.

Wednesday at Happy Valley Racecourse, JetWings will have his third start of the season in the $224,696 France Galop Cup Handicap at six furlongs on turf. This will be his first start since a win in a minor handicap at Happy Valley on March 15. JetWings was entered in a handicap on April 26, but was withdrawn because of lameness in his left foreleg.

Trained by Richard Gibson, JetWings has won 3 of 9 starts in his career. He is part of a field of 12 in the France Galop Cup Handicap and will carry 132 pounds, one less than topweight Blocker Dee. Douglas Whyte has the mount on JetWings, who is a threat from off the pace.

The France Galop Cup Handicap is the seventh race on an eight-race program. Wagering is available on DRFBets.com.

Blocker Dee won a minor handicap in February, but is winless in his last four starts. He raced in traffic with about three furlongs to go in his last start, at Sha Tin on April 17, and finished ninth, beaten three lengths.

The speedy Sea Jade will play a pivotal role, if he can avoid the poor start that led to a ninth-place finish as the favorite at Happy Valley on April 26. A five-time winner in Hong Kong this season, Sea Jade typically sets the pace, but will face a challenge from Romantic Cash, who has not raced since December 2015.

A 6-year-old gelding, Romantic Cash has won half of his eight starts, all in Hong Kong.

Premiere is the lone 3-year-old in the race. Premiere, who will carry 118 pounds, won three consecutive starts from early December to early February against lesser competition, and is not without a chance as a stalker in this tougher group.
