Home Brew re-routed from Haskell to West Virginia Derby

Home Brew, who had been considered for the Haskell Stakes on July 23 at Monmouth Park after winning the Pegasus Stakes there June 18, will bypass the Haskell in favor of a start Aug. 6 in the $500,000 West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer Park, trainer Brad Cox said Tuesday.
Home Brew, a Gary and Mary West homebred colt by Street Sense, won the $150,000 Oaklawn Stakes on April 23 and took a serious forward step, at least in terms of his Beyer Speed Figure, jumping from an 84 at Oaklawn to a 97 winning the Pegasus by 6 1/4 lengths. Off that performance he’s sure to be one of the favorites in the 1 1/8-mile West Virginia Derby.

“He’s never been a real big horse, but we feel like he’s maybe put on some weight since the Pegasus,” said Cox. “His works have been good. He seems to do well with time between starts.”
