Hollywood shipper has top credentials

Dale Omenson|Jun 29, 2001

PLEASANTON, Calif. - Britetonzmyday, a recent maiden winner at Hollywood Park, looks like the one to beat when she meets eight other 2-year-old fillies in Sunday's $40,000 Juan Gonzalez Memorial Stakes at five furlongs at the Alameda County Fair.

Only one of these fillies has started more than twice, and there is one first-time starter with decent credentials in the field, so just about anything could happen. But there is lots to like about Britetonzmyday, although the price probably won't be much.

She made her debut in a two-furlong race at Santa Anita on April 13, closing some ground at the end to miss by a head. Brought back in a 4 1/2-furlong maiden race, Britetonzmyday opened a clear lead and won by almost three lengths, handily, in 52.40 seconds. Her Beyer Speed Figure of 70 is tied for the best ever produced by any of these fillies.

It remains to be seen if she can duplicate the effort without a clear lead, but there is no real reason to believe she can't. She has two strong recent works and seems set for another big effort. Wesley Ward trains.

There are many others who must be considered, but the main threats may be Aglow and The News' West, who finished second and third, respectively, in a fast 4 1/2-furlong maiden race at Bay Meadows on May 23. Aglow has not started since then, while The News' West came back to beat maidens by eight lengths in rather slow time June 8.

Another strong threat is Nicoles Mata Lion, who won her only start in a two-furlong race at Santa Anita on June 8. She won by 2 1/2 lengths in 21.60 seconds. Ted West trains.

Capital Growth, from the Jerry Hollendorfer stable, also has shown ability. She won her debut in a $25,000 maiden-claiming race at Bay Meadows on May 20, then finished a fast-closing third in the Time to Leave Stakes there.

Wrath of My Fury, a first-time starter from the Jeff Bonde stable, must also be considered, especially since Bonde lives in Pleasanton and always points for this meeting. She has shown ability in the mornings, and has a recent 59 work from the gate.
