Trainer John Sadler will be at Churchill Downs on Friday to saddle Zazu in the Kentucky Oaks. He has two good reasons to hurry back to Hollywood Park for Saturday’s card, and not stick around Churchill Downs for the Derby. Sadler intends to start Sidney’s Candy in next Saturday’s $150,000 Mervyn LeRoy Handicap over 1 1/16 miles and Cost of Freedom in the $70,000 Cool Frenchy Stakes over five furlongs. Sidney’s Candy, a multiple stakes winner owned by Jenny Craig, has not started since winning the Sir Beaufort Stakes at Santa Anita in December. He missed the rest of the Santa Anita meeting because of minor ailments. Sidney’s Candy’s participation in the Mervyn LeRoy hinges on a workout on Sunday, but Sadler said the race is firmly in his plans. “I just want to make sure his last work is good,” Sadler said. Cost of Freedom, 8, has not started since finishing third in the Sunshine Millions Sprint at Santa Anita in January. He won three consecutive sprint stakes here last fall for owner Gary and Cecil Barber. Twirling Candy, the winner of the Malibu Stakes in December and the Strub Stakes in February, is being pointed for the $150,000 Californian Stakes on June 4, Sadler said. “That looks like the best race out there for him,” Sadler said. Twirling Candy was fifth as the favorite in the Santa Anita Handicap in March and missed training last month because of an abscess in a foot. The Cool Frenchy Stakes will not include Kinsale King, the winner of the $2 million Golden Shaheen Sprint in Dubai in 2010. Trainer Carl O’Callaghan said on Friday that Kinsale King has been turned out because of concerns over a recent blood test. “I think we’ll stop on him,” O’Callaghan said. “The blood work is still out of whack.” Kinsale King will be given a 60-day rest, with the hope of having him back for a fall campaign, O’Callaghan said. Pedaltothemedal points to Railbird Pedaltothemedal, the sharp winner of an allowance race for 3-year-old fillies on April 24, will make her stakes debut in the $100,000 Railbird Stakes over seven furlongs on May 21. “That’s where we’re headed,” trainer Art Sherman said on Friday. “She’s really feeling good right now and I’m happy about everything. I hope I have a good one.” Owned by Ackerman Stable, Pedaltothemedal has won 2 of 3 stars. The April 24 race was her first race since a maiden win at Del Mar last summer. In the April 24 race, Pedaltothemedal was sixth early under Joe Talamo and closed well to win by 1 1-2 lengths over Big Tiz, another Railbird candidate. “Seven-eighths will be a good test,” he said. “If she comes out of the race in good shape, we’ll know where we’re at.” Ultra Blend, who won the B. Thoughtful Stakes on April 23, will attempt to win her first graded stakes in the $150,000 Milady Handicap on May 21, Sherman said. “I think the timing is perfect for that race,” he said. Ultra Blend has won six stakes in her 20-race career.
