Hollywood Park horses to watch: Week of Dec. 14
A P PEPPER
Trainer: Dan Blacker
Last Race: Dec. 5, 2nd
Finish: 1st by 2 1/4
Beyer: 55
Flashed talent when second and third in her first two starts, the latter coming for $50K over this track Nov. 23. Well, she got blinkers added to her equipment and looked like a new filly as she stalked the pace, went after the leaders into the lane, took over late, and drew off to win easily. The way she won here hints she’s ready for a step up, so long as it’s not too severe.
LUMBERYARD JACK
Trainer: Bob Hess Sr.
Last Race: Dec. 6, 4th
Finish: 2nd by 4 1/2
Beyer: 84
Slow into stride and still sitting last turning for home, he finished strongly. Trouble is, he ran into rejuvenated former Grade 1 winner, Willyconker, who turned back the clock and ran even better. His strong finish bodes well for the future for new trainer Bob Hess Sr., who claimed him for $40K.
YARD LINE
Trainer: Eoin Harty
Last Race: Dec. 7, 2nd
Finish: 2nd by 1 1/4
Beyer: 89
Son of Grade 1 winner Discreet Cat tipped his mitt in this debut that he has ability. He hopped at the start to get away last but was able to establish position stalking pacesetter and eventual winner Chitu. He doggedly kept after that foe through the lane, was unable to get to him but gamely held second. Next time.
SHAKEITUPBETTY
Trainer: Eric Kruljac
Last Race: Dec. 8, 7th
Finish: 3rd by 1 1/2
Beyer: 54
An auspicious first run for this daughter of Ghostzapper. She was last early, still well back turning for home but then found her best stride and finished with good energy. She can certainly move forward with this run under her belt and surely a better start next time would help as well.
