Hollywood Park carryover reaches $103,343

Steve Andersen|Jun 04, 2003

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - There is a carryover of $103,343 on Thursday's eight-race program at Hollywood Park, a card plagued by short fields.

Bettors will not have many horses to sort through in Thursday's pick six, which covers the third through eighth races.

The third race drew five runners. Venture Cat is 8-5 on the morning line to beat four other 3-year-old entered to be claimed for $22,500 to $25,000. The race is run over 1 1-16 miles.

The fourth race is run over five furlongs for 2-year-old California-bred maiden fillies. Thedevilinme, trained by Bob Baffert, and Alpenwald, trained by Mike Harrington, are top contenders.

The fifth race features one of the largest fields of the day. There are nine entrants in an allowance race for California-breds over 1 1-16 miles on turf. Roberto's Show, second at this level in his last two starts, is the 5-2 favorite on the morning line.

There are only six starters in the sixth race, run over seven furlongs for fillies and mares entered to be claimed for $10,500 to $12,500. Castlebright, claimed for $20,000 on April 27, takes a drop in class, but must beat fellow droppers Meteor Game, She's Some Fox and Free Shot.

The featured seventh race marks the second U.S. race for Christel Flame, a stakes winner in France last year. Trained by Neil Drysdale, Christel Flame is 8-5 on the morning-line to beat five others in an optional claimer.

The last race is run over five furlongs for 2-year-old maiden claimers. There are 10 starters. Bettors may be forced to spread in a race that lacks a standout.

Fast Splash, fourth against maiden special weight company on April 30, takes a drop in class. The first-time starter Itsagalthing deserves consideration. Trainer Alfredo Marquez is due for a breakthrough win at the meeting and has a strong record with first-time runners.
