Hollywood Park: Bond Holder to run in CashCall Futurity
RACE REPLAY IS NOT AVAILABLE
INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Bond Holder was set for a quiet end of the year after a fourth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita on Nov. 2.
Trainer Doug O’Neill and owners Paul and Zillah Reddam intended to rest Bond Holder until 2014, a plan that changed when the colt resumed workouts in late November. A series of sharp works has put Bond Holder on schedule for the $750,000 CashCall Futurity at Betfair Hollywood Park on Saturday.
For Paul Reddam, it’s a chance to win a race that his lending company sponsors.
Bond Holder worked six furlongs in 1:12.60 at Santa Anita last Thursday, which clinched his participation, O’Neill said.
“He’s training really strongly,” O’Neill said. “He’s giving me all the signs he’ll compete at a high level. To me, he’s trained like a beast.”
Bond Holder won the Grade 1 FrontRunner Stakes over 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita on Sept. 28. It was his his first start at the distance and his first win from five career starts. In the BC Juvenile, Bond Holder closed from 12th in a field of 13 to finish 3 1/4 lengths behind the winner, New Year’s Day.
O’Neill said Bond Holder has shown improvement in each start, and he expects more in the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity, run over 1 1/16 miles.
“He’s a horse making a steady rise,” O’Neill said. “He’s a classy horse.”
The CashCall Futurity has a projected field of eight, led by the stakes winners Shared Belief and Tamarando, and Tap It Rich, who was fifth in the BC Juvenile. The other projected starters are Candy Boy, Craftsman, Kobe’s Back, and Rankhasprivileges.
Trainer Todd Pletcher said in a text message Friday that We Miss Artie would not be sent to California for a second time this fall, having finished seventh in the BC Juvenile.
New Year’s Day has resumed exercise but will not start in the CashCall Futurity, trainer Bob Baffert said.
“We’re just starting to get him going,” Baffert said. “I gave him a few weeks off.”
Jeranimo targets San Gabriel
Jeranimo, seventh in the BC Turf Sprint at Santa Anita on Nov. 2, will start in the $200,000 San Gabriel Stakes at Santa Anita on Jan. 4, a race he won in 2010 and earlier this year.
A 7-year-old horse, Jeranimo won the Grade 1 Eddie Read Stakes at Del Mar in July but lost his final three starts this year. The Grade 2 San Gabriel is run over 1 1/8 miles on turf.
“We’re gearing him up for his 8-year-old campaign,” trainer Mike Pender said Friday.
Jeranimo, who races for B.J. Wright and Robert LaPenta, has won 10 of 38 starts and earned $1,401,364.
The San Gabriel could include Dubai You X Y Z, the winner of an optional claimer over a mile on turf Friday. Dubai You X Y Z was timed in 1:33.71, winning his first start since May. He was sidelined with a stomach ailment over the summer.
“He deserves a chance in that kind of race,” owner and trainer Mark Tsagalakis said of the San Gabriel.
Perez to miss three weeks
Jockey Fernando Perez broke his collarbone in a two-horse spill in Friday’s first race, according to his agent, Jim Pegram.
Perez was unseated from Bob Consultation, who was racing behind Rocky Barboa when that horse broke down while vying for the lead. Alex Bisono, who rode Rocky Barboa, was not injured. Rocky Barboa was euthanized. Bob Consultation was not injured, according to trainer Jack Carava.
Perez, a former leading rider at Hastings Park in British Columbia, has three wins at the current meeting. He is expected to miss at least three weeks, Pegram said.
