Hollywood Park: Basmati heading to CashCall Futurity

Steve Andersen|Nov 22, 2011

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Basmati, the runner-up in the $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot in Louisiana on Saturday, will make his next start in the $750,000 CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park on Dec. 17, trainer Doug O’Neill said.

“As long we get him back training and he shows the same energy and want and will, I think that’s the plan,” O’Neill said.
In the Delta Downs Jackpot over 1 1/16 miles, Basmati closed from sixth in a field of 10 to challenge eventual winner Sabercat in early stretch before losing by four lengths.

“We were so pumped up,” O’Neill said. “He ran a great race. There were a couple of points when I thought we’d get the whole thing. He still has learning to do.”

Owned by Zillah Reddam, Basmati, a colt by Borrego, has one win in seven starts and earnings of $278,800. He was fifth in the Del Mar Futurity and fourth in the Norfolk Stakes as a maiden before winning a maiden race over a mile at Santa Anita on Oct. 28.

Zillah Reddam is the wife of Paul Reddam, the owner of the CashCall financial company which sponsors the futurity of that name at Hollywood Park.
Basmati was ridden in the Delta Downs Jackpot by Corey Nakatani, who will retain the mount for the CashCall Futurity, O’Neill said.

Reyes gets three days

Jockey Christian Santiago Reyes has been suspended three days for careless riding last Saturday, the stewards announced in a ruling on Sunday.
Reyes was cited for altering course without sufficient clearance aboard Neurosurgeon in the day’s sixth race. Neurosurgeon finished eighth of 11 in a maiden race over six furlongs.

The suspension covers racing on Nov. 26-27 and Dec. 1.
