Hollywood Park: $48 pick-six ticket yields $207,087 payout

Steve Andersen|Jul 02, 2011

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – One of the two winning tickets worth $207,087 in Saturday’s pick six at Hollywood Park was purchased ontrack for $48, according to track officials.

The other ticket was purchased at Santa Anita, but the exact cost of that ticket was not available Saturday evening.

The $48 ticket used one to three horses per race and singled the winners of the day’s two Grade 1 races. To achieve the lucrative payoff, the winning ticket included two high-priced longshots using a format of 3x1x2x2x1x2.

In the first leg, Saturday’s fifth race, the winning ticketholder selected three outsiders – race winner Don Elias M. ($41), Johnnie Gold, who finished seventh at 16-1, and Peacock Alliance, who was last of eight at 23-1.

In the sixth race, the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile, the ticket singled even-money winner Courageous Cat, who won by a neck over Caracortado.

There were two selections in the seventh race, a sprint for older statebred maidens, Memphis ($66.40), a first-time starter, and Goodbye Charlie, who was scratched at the gate because of a minor injury. It was not clear whether the winning ticket marked an alternate selection for the scratched horse, which can be done on bet cards in California, or whether the ticket defaulted to the post-time favorite, runner-up Madeoftherightstuf, who was sent off at 5-2. The margin between the first two finishers was a head.

In the eighth race, an optional claimer over a mile on turf, race winner Leroy’s Dynameaux ($12) was one of two selections, along with Sterling Outlook, the 2-1 favorite who fought for the lead and faded to finish eighth.

There was little suspense in the ninth race. Smiling Tiger ($5.40) was a single selection and led throughout to win by 3 1/4 lengths. Smiling Tiger was the second choice in the betting.

The winning ticket had two chances in the last, and the lower-priced of the selections prevailed. Unhitchthetrailor paid $6, while the other selection, Huntsville, the second choice and also a 2-1 chance, could only manage seventh.
