INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Continental Red, the 2002 California-bred horse of the year, won his first stakes of 2003 in the $102,250 Quicken Tree Stakes.
Ridden by Patrick Valenzuela, Continental Red stalked pacesetter Lily's Lady to the final turn and drew off in the stretch to win by 4 1/2 lengths. Sent off favored, Continental Red ($6.20) ran 1 1/2 miles on turf in 2:26.66.
Lily's Lad finished in a dead heat for second with Shalini, a 4-year-old filly racing against males for the first time.
Continental Red won the Great State Challenge Classic at Sam Houston Race Park last December but had lost three consecutive stakes in the first five months of this year.
