Hollywood autumn stakes schedule once again topped by CashCall Futurity

Led by the Grade 1, $750,000 CashCall Futurity, a stakes program numbering 17 races worth more than $3 million in purses has been released by Hollywood Park for its autumn meeting, a 26-day season that runs from Nov. 10 through Dec. 18.

The CashCall Futurity, to be run this year on Dec. 17, has proven to be a preview of coming attractions for the following year’s top Triple Crown prospects. In 2009, for instance, the winner was Lookin At Lucky, who wrapped up an Eclipse Award with that victory at age 2 and the next year was the champion 3-year-old male, when his wins included the Preakness Stakes.

Since its inaugural running in 1981, the winners of six Kentucky Derbies and 15 Triple Crown races have run in the Futurity.

In addition to the Futurity, the autumn meeting is highlighted by the annual Turf Festival, which is run Thanksgiving weekend Nov. 25-27 and includes three Grade 1, $250,000 races – the Matriarch Stakes for older females, the Citation Stakes for older horses, and the Hollywood Derby for 3-year-olds. The Turf Festival has two other graded stakes, the Miesque for 2-year-old fillies and the Generous for 2-year-olds.

The other Grade 1 races are the Hollywood Turf Cup for older horses on Nov. 19, and the Hollywood Starlet for 2-year-old fillies on Dec. 10.

Racing will be conducted four days a week, Thursday through Sunday. With the meet ending on Dec. 18, that will afford an eight-day holiday break preceding the opening of Santa Anita’s main winter meeting on Dec. 26.
