SHAKOPEE, Minn. – Hold for More aims to continue his dominance of Minnesota-bred colts and geldings in Saturday’s $80,000 Minnesota Derby. Trained by Francisco Bravo, who is enjoying a 23-for-84 meet, Hold for More has won his last five starts, including three victories this season. On July 19 in the $55,000 MTA Stallion Auction Laddie, Hold for More cruised to a 7 1/4-length win over Minnesota Derby foes Plenty of Sun and Bold Entry. The Derby, contested at one mile and 70 yards, provides Hold for More with a new test as he goes a two-turn route for the first time. The Hold Me Back gelding will again be partnered with jockey Dean Butler, who leads the rider standings with 54 wins. Chris Mars and Steviefromstanley head Hold for More’s opposition in the nine-horse field. The improving Chris Mars drew the rail, and the Forestry gelding also makes his initial try at the extended distance. Steviefromstanley has faced older opposition in three straight races at a mile or longer. His July 19 try, when second by a nose at the Derby distance, gives the Stevie Wonderboy gelding, who is bred, owned, and trained by Ron Thompson, an upset chance. On the Minnesota Derby undercard, a pair of overnight stakes, the $40,000 Careless Navigator and the $40,000 John Bullit, will be run. In the Careless Navigator, the undefeated colt Stormation, the 3-5 morning-line favorite, faces five fellow 2-year-olds in the 5 1/2-furlong sprint. The John Bullit, a 1 1/16-mile test that drew seven runners, provides another opportunity for Red Zeus to transfer his considerable turf ability to the main track. KEY CONTENDERS Chris Mars (Last 3 Beyers: 59-42-34) Trainer Bernell Rhone has an 18 percent record in 2014-15 when stretching runners out from sprints to routes. Steviefromstanley (Last 3 Beyers: 58-57-59) Jockey Leandro Goncalves stays aboard and has won on 47 of his 203 mounts in his first season here. Plenty of Sun (Last 3 Beyers: 47-36-40) Trainer Valorie Lund adds blinkers and is 5 for 8 when adding headgear in 2014-15. Hold for More (Last 3 Beyers: 63-63-70) Jockey Butler wins at a 31 percent clip for the Bravo stable in 2014-15. Keith’s Legacy (Last 3 Beyers: -0-47-61) Dismiss the July 16 turf-course flop and he has the look of an improving closer who might relish added ground.
