Hips to watch: Keeneland November Book 1

Following are horses to watch during the Keeneland November breeding stock sale’s elite Book 1 portion, which begins the sale Wednesday, Nov. 6. Horses were selected based primarily on their pedigrees and the racing or commercial results of notable family members. The selections reflect catalog updates, outs, and supplemental entries to the catalog through Nov. 3.
Hip 9, weanling filly by Curlin – La Verdad, by Yes It’s True. Consigned by Denali Stud, agent for Lady Sheila Stable.
Classic sire Curlin is enjoying a career year in the commercial arena, siring the most expensive juvenile and most expensive yearling colt sold in North America this season. This is the third foal out of Eclipse Award champion female sprinter La Verdad. Her first, a Medaglia d’Oro filly, was a $775,000 buyback as a yearling, and her second, a Tapit filly, sold for $800,000 as a weanling last fall. Placement early in the catalog, which is determined by alphabetical order based on name or dam name, is considered an uphill battle as market momentum is established, but several solid lots are slotted early at Keeneland November.

Lil Indy, dam of multiple Grade 1 winner Maximum Security, and her weanling full sister to her best runner will be offered back to back. Lil Indy, dam of three winners from four starters overall, is herself a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Flat Out, who earned more than $3.6 million.

These are the first mares being offered in foal to unbeaten Triple Crown winner Justify. Molly Corbin is a half-sister to European champion Peeping Fawn, dam of Group 1-placed stakes winner September and Group 2-placed Sir John Hawkins. Molly Corbin and Peeping Fawn also are half-siblings to Group 1 winner Theway-youare. Group 1-placed Maryingsky is out of Kentucky Oaks winner and blue hen Blush With Pride, making her a half-sister to multiple classic producer Better Than Honour, among others.
Hip 39, Nereid (Quality Road), broodmare by Rock Hard Ten – Dowry, by Belong to Me. Consigned by Lane’s End, agent.
Nereid, winner of the Grade 1 American Oaks in 2011 and placed in three other Grade 1 stakes, sold for $1.3 million at the conclusion of her racing career. The mare, a half-sister to Grade 1-placed Sea Queen, is already the dam of Grade 3-placed stakes winner Figarella’s Queen. Nereid’s yearling colt sold for $825,000 at Keeneland September.
Hip 93, Spiced Perfection, racing or broodmare prospect by Smiling Tiger – Perfect Feat, by Pleasantly Perfect. Consigned by Elite Sales, agent.
Spiced Perfection, who started in Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, won the Grade 1 La Brea Stakes last December at Santa Anita and the Grade 1 Madison Stakes this spring at Keeneland. She also won Keeneland’s Grade 2 Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes. The racing or broodmare prospect is a full sister to stakes winner Cruel Intention.
Hip 96, Stanwyck (Into Mischief), broodmare by Empire Maker – Set Them Free, by Stop the Music. Consigned by Claiborne Farm, agent.
Stanwyck was a Grade 3 winner and multiple Grade 1-placed, and her pedigree also helped make her a $2.4 million broodmare prospect. She is a half-sister to Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo and multiple Grade 1 winner Tiago, as well as Grade 3-placed Sea Jewel and the winning Styler, dam of stakes winner Almond Roca, Grade 3-placed Calistoga, and stakes-placed Achira. Her lone foal offered at public auction was a $750,000 yearling in 2017.

This is the first crop for Eclipse Award champion and leading money-winner Arrogate. This colt is a half-brother to Eclipse Award champion juvenile Hansen and to Anonymity, who was third in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.

Take Charge Brandi was the Eclipse Award champion 2-year-old filly of 2014 and was the most expensive horse sold at public auction in North America in 2015, when she led Keeneland November at $6 million. She and her weanling colt are being offered as part of a dispersal that is the result of a dissolution of a partnership involving Hill ‘n’ Dale. Take Charge Brandi is a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Omaha Beach and Group 1-placed Courage Under Fire. Their dam, Charming, is out of multiple Grade 1 winner Take Charge Lady, dam of champion Will Take Charge and Grade 1 winner Take Charge Indy. This weanling is the third foal for Take Charge Brandi; her first, a Curlin colt, sold for $850,000 at Keeneland September in 2018 while her second, a full brother to this colt, was a $775,000 buyback this September.

Totally Tucker is the dam of graded stakes winners Totally Boss and Super Steed. The mare is a half-sister to Grade 1 winners Majestic Harbor and Danza.

Violent Beauty is the dam of three winners from as many starters, led by Grade 1 winner and young sire Violence. The mare’s three weanlings sold at public auction have averaged $710,000. Storming Beauty, a full sister to group stakes winner Hurricane Cat, is out of champion Sky Beauty, and this also is the immediate family of champion Dayjur and others.

Visual Mind, the dam of stakes-placed Mind Mapping, is a half-sister to Preakness Stakes winner War of Will, Group 1 winner Pathfork, and stakes winner Tacticus. Stakes winner Visions of Clarity is a half-sister to Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Spinning World. This is a branch of the family of blue hen Best in Show, with another branch of that family responsible for the outstanding broodmares Blush With Pride and Better Than Honour.

Grade 2 winner Zardana raced with distinction against two of the greatest racemares in modern history, defeating Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra in the New Orleans Ladies Stakes and finishing third to Horse of the Year Zenyatta in the Grade 1 Vanity Handicap. Her first foal was stakes winner Smart Transition.

Grade 1 winner Appealing Zophie is the dam of Belmont Stakes winner Tapwrit and Grade 2 winner Ride a Comet. Tapwrit, a seven-figure yearling, is a full brother to this filly.

Bellavais, who sold for $485,000 at the 2018 Keeneland January sale, is a multiple stakes winner, with her biggest score coming in the Grade 3 Marshua’s River Stakes this past January. Grade 3 winner La Cloche is one of four stakes winners out of Grade 1 winner Memories of Silver, whose runners are led by Grade 1 winner Winter Memories. La Cloche also is one of five stakes producers out of Memories of Silver.

Callback, a Grade 1 winner as a juvenile, was purchased for $2.8 million by Elevage, a partnership involving Hill ‘n’ Dale, at the 2017 Fasig-Tipton November sale. She and her weanling colt are now being offered as part of a dispersal that is the result of a dissolution of that partnership. Callback is a half-sister to stakes winner and producer Defy Gravity, and their dam, Quickest, is a half-sister to Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver. This is the extended family of champion Rhythm, among others. This family has been commercially popular; Quickest was the dam of a weanling sold for $1 million in 2017 at Fasig-Tipton November who was then tied for the record price for a weanling at that sale, and Defy Gravity has been represented by a $750,000 yearling.

Grade 1 winner Dame Dorothy is a half-sister to French Group 1 winner Mrs. Lindsay, dam of stakes winner Mr. Owen. This is the immediate family of multiple Grade 1 winner Unaccounted For. Dame Dorothy’s lone offering at public auction thus far was a seven-figure yearling sold last year.

Eskimo Kisses, a granddaughter of Kentucky Derby winner and champion Winning Colors, won the historic Grade 1 Alabama Stakes. She is carrying her first foal.

Stakes-placed Getback Time is the dam of three winners from five starters, led by Canadian classic winner and champion Shaman Ghost, who won the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap and Woodward Stakes. She is offered carrying a full sibling to her champion.

Stakes-placed Inventive is the dam of Grade 1-winning juvenile Klimt and Grade 3-placed West Coast Chick. Klimt entered stud in 2018 and was the third-busiest stallion in North America in his first season, covering 222 mares, according to The Jockey Club’s Report of Mares Bred. Klimt is by Quality Road, and the foal Inventive is carrying is from the first crop of that sire’s multiple Grade 1 winner City of Light.
