Hips to watch at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale

Nicole Russo|Mar 22, 2019

Following are horses to watch at the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale of 2-year-olds in training. Horses were selected based primarily on their pedigrees and the racing or commercial results of notable family members. The selections reflect catalog updates and sale outs through March 20.

Hip 7, colt by Medaglia d’Oro - Broadway’s Alibi, by Vindication. Consigned by Eddie Woods, agent.

Multiple graded stakes winner Broadway’s Alibi, who finished second in the Kentucky Oaks, is a half-sister to Grade 3 winner Golden Lad and Grade 1-placed stakes winner R Gypsy Gold. Their dam, stakes winner Broadway Gold, is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner and sire Dialed In. Medaglia d’Oro, who sired last year’s co-topping $1.2 million filly at Fasig Gulfstream, is coming off a solid commercial season with his yearlings, with three seven-figure horses at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale and five at Keeneland September. This female family is commercially popular – Broadway’s Alibi sold for $2.15 million as a broodmare, R Gypsy Gold is the dam of yearlings sold for $825,000 and $775,000, and Broadway Gold is the dam of a $700,000 yearling.

Hip 10, colt by American Pharoah - Chit Chatter, by Lost Soldier. Consigned by William B. Harrigan, agent.

This is the first crop of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, who averaged $453,273 from his yearlings last season and was represented by a $600,000 filly to start this season at OBS March. This colt is a half-brother to multiple Grade 1 winner I’m A Chatterbox and stakes-placed Lady Bear and Pegasus Again.

Hip 11, colt by War Front - Circle the Empire, by Empire Maker. Consigned by Hartley/de Renzo Thoroughbreds, agent.

This is one of just two in this sale by prominent international sire and commercial juggernaut War Front. Three of Circle the Empire’s half-sisters have produced stakes winners, led by Chatham, the dam of European champion juvenile Air Force Blue, by War Front. This is the immediate family of champion Flanders, who in turn produced champion Surfside.

Hip 22, colt by Empire Maker - Diplomat Lady, by Forestry. Consigned by Q Bar J Thoroughbreds, agent.

This is the only offering in the sale by Empire Maker, whose 2-year-olds are his first since being repatriated from Japan. Diplomat Lady, winner of the Grade 1 Starlet Stakes, is the dam of three winners from four starters.

Hip 26, colt by Ghostzapper - Ellie’s Moment, by Kris S. Consigned by Kirkwood Stables, agent for Midway Gallop LLC.

This colt, who will gallop instead of breezing during the under-tack preview, is a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Time and Motion, stakes winner Awesome Bet, and stakes-placed Moment in Dixie. This is a deep Darby Dan family. It is rare to have opportunities to buy into these families, but this sale presents a handful of opportunities. Appearing on the catalog page are Grade 1 winners Brian’s Time and Ocean Quest. Another branch of this family produced Grade 1 winner and prominent broodmare Memories of Silver, and this is the extended family of sire Dynaformer.
