OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Highway Star will attempt to bounce back from the most disappointing performance in her 14-race career when she starts as the expected favorite in Saturday’s Grade 3, $200,000 Go for Wand Handicap at Aqueduct. For fillies and mares, the Go for Wand will be run at a one-turn mile. Highway Star, who won last year’s Go for Wand, had put together five consecutive solid performances in graded stakes – winning three of them – entering the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint on Nov. 4 at Del Mar. But Angel Arroyo kept her close to a hot early pace in the Breeders’ Cup, and she was basically done by the quarter pole. The trip, and the result, left trainer Rodrigo Ubillo dumbfounded. The race was won by 65-1 shot Bar of Gold, whom Highway Star had beaten three times in her career. Chester and Mary Broman bred and owned both Bar of Gold and Highway Star. “The reason she ran that way in the Breeders’ Cup was because she was just too forward with a pace that was fairly quick,” Ubillo said. “She doesn’t run that way.” Ubillo didn’t decide until late Wednesday morning to enter Highway Star in the Go for Wand. “I wanted to make sure she was okay,” Ubillo said. “She’s ready to run.” Ubillo gave Arroyo a chance to make amends in the Go for Wand. Highway Star breaks from post 2 and carries high weight of 123 pounds. She will be conceding seven pounds to the Chad Brown-trained pair of Jamyson ‘n Ginger and Going for Broke. Jamyson ‘n Ginger was purchased by Juddmonte Farms earlier this year, presumably as a broodmare match for Arrogate, and was transferred to Brown. After getting the summer off, Jamyson ‘n Ginger has returned with two solid allowance wins going the one-turn mile. She finished second in the Grade 2 Demoiselle last year. “She’s really rounding back into form now,” Brown said. “I’m optimistic she’s going to run a good race.” Going for Broke had a good race in the Shine Again Stakes at Saratoga, finishing second by a neck to Carina Mia, then was well beaten in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign by Forever Unbridled. She is coming off a second-place finish in a third-level allowance race. Verve’s Tale was beaten a head by Eskenformoney in the final jump of the Grade 3 Turnback the Alarm Handicap at Belmont on Oct. 28. Trainer Barclay Tagg felt jockey Joel Rosario moved too early on Verve’s Tale, and now John Velazquez, who rode Eskenformoney, is aboard Verve’s Tale. Lucy N Ethel, winner of the Pumpkin Pie Stakes going six furlongs on Nov. 5, will attempt to stretch out to a mile. Flora Dora and Indulgent complete the field. The Go for Wand kicks off the NYRA Bets late pick five, which is restricted to NYRA Bets account holders and those who wager in New York state either on track or at an off-track betting facility.
