Highway Boss 7-6-2014
Vassar Photography Dennis Carr brings home Highway Boss by a head over Global Magician in the Everett Nevin for 2-year-olds.

Highway Boss sat off a fast early pace and then ran down favored Global Magician and pacesetting Lucky Fame in the lane to capture the closing day Oak Tree at Pleasanton feature, the $59,515 Everett Nevin on Sunday at the Alameda County Fairgrounds.

Highway Boss ($21.20) was content to sit back early as Lucky Fame and stablemate Discreet Flirt set the pace. Highway Boss raced three-wide down the backstretch, moved inside to save ground on the turn, and then moved back out to the three-path in the lane.

Lucky Fame had a two-length lead after the opening half-mile in 44.90 seconds, but he was challenged in the stretch by Global Magician, who seemed to have him measured.

Global Magician went past the tiring leader, but Dennis Carr rallied Highway Boss from the outside and won the 51/2-furlong race for 2-year-olds by a head in 1:04.50. Lucky Fame was third, two lengths behind Global Magician.

Highway Boss, a $32,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase by Regan Anderson and Ken Fishbien was making his fourth career start. He ran third against winners in his debut in Arizona and then finished fifth in ATBA Sales Stakes. He won his maiden for a $50,000 tag at Santa Anita on June 6.

Highway Boss is by multiple Grade 1 sprint winner Street Boss and is the first foal from the unraced Sage Mist, a daughter of Henny Hughes, who was also a multiple Grade 1 sprint winner.

The Molly Pearson-trained Highway Boss earned $32,850 for the victory and has earned $53,804 for his career.
