General gambling principles suggest taking a very short price on a horse trying something for the first time constitutes poor wagering. Which doesn’t mean you can’t look forward to watching Baaeed race Sunday at Longchamp in the Group 1 Prix du Moulin. Based in England with trainer William Haggas, unbeaten Baaeed absolutely has given the appearance of a Group 1-level performer. Still, the fact is he has yet to compete above the Group 3 level and is the strong favorite in the one-mile Moulin. So far, just watching Baaeed race has been nearly as fun as cashing a bet. Bred to race longer than one mile, Baaeed, a Shadwell homebred by Sea The Stars, didn’t debut until June 7 at Leicester, but in four starts he has steamrolled the 26 horses entered against him. Following a 1 1/4-length debut score, Baaeed won a novice stakes at Newmarket by more than seven lengths while eased up. Back at Newmarket for the listed Henry Cecil Stakes over one mile on July 8, he broke poorly and galloped at the field’s tail before cruising to the leaders while scarcely appearing to get out of a gallop, winning off by four lengths as his jockey once again coasted to the wire. Second in the Cecil was Maximal, hardly a star, but a colt who in his most recent race had finished a creditable fourth of 13 in the Group 1 St. James’s Palace Stakes. :: Bet the races with confidence on DRF Bets. Moved up to the Group 3 level on July 30 at Goodwood, Baaeed didn’t miss a beat, unleashing the same brilliant turn of foot that this time propelled him to a 6 1/2-length victory. There is no question Baaeed faces a far stronger group of rivals on Sunday in the one-turn Moulin. Order of Australia, Victor Ludorum, and Snow Lantern are Group 1 winners, Lope Y Fernandez is Group 1-placed, and Novemba finished fourth of 11 in the Group 1 Coronation at Royal Ascot. Novemba and Snow Lantern, 3-year-old fillies, get four pounds from Baeed, the only 3-year-old colt in the race, and eight from the older males, and Snow Lantern looks like a serious threat. Trained in England by Richard Hannon Jr., Snow Lantern, a true miler, has raced well throughout a campaign that began in April, finishing second to the smart Alcohol Free in the Coronation, her Group 1 debut. She proceeded to win the Group 1 Falmouth over a straight mile at Newmarket, beating a solid bunch of older mares as well as 2021 classic winner Mother Earth, and comes into Sunday’s start off a good third behind Alcohol Free and the high-level colt Poetic Flare in the Group 1 Sussex at Goodwood. That race was run over soft ground, and Snow Lantern likely prefers firmer footing, which she might well get Sunday. Order of Australia’s only win in five starts since his massive Breeders’ Cup Mile upset last fall came in a minor Group 2 in Ireland, though he was an improved third behind top miler Palace Pier last out in Group 1 Jacques le Marois, a straight-course mile Aug. 15 at Deauville.
