The recent stakes winners Hey Nay Nay and Intrepido, both intended runners in Breeders’ Cup races for 2-year-olds at Del Mar on Oct. 31, worked at Santa Anita on Friday in moderate and slow times.
Hey Nay Nay, winner of the Grade 3 Del Mar Juvenile Turf on Sept. 7 and undefeated in three starts, worked five furlongs in 1:00.80, which ranked as the 20th-fastest time of 43 works at the distance. Hey Nay Nay is scheduled to start in the BC Juvenile Turf at a mile.
“The track was a little heavy this morning,” trainer John Sadler said. “He’s right on schedule.”
Owned by Hronis Racing and Iapetus Racing, Hey Nay Nay won a maiden race at Santa Anita in May and the Tyro Stakes for turf sprinters at Monmouth Park in August.
“He’s got a good pattern of improvement on his numbers,” Sadler said. “I think we’re right we’re supposed to be.”
Intrepido won his stakes debut in the Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes at 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita on Oct. 4, overcoming traffic issues. The American Pharoah was a prep race for the BC Juvenile at the same distance.
On Friday, Intrepido worked a half-mile in 52.80 seconds, the slowest of 48 works at the distance. Trainer Jeff Mullins clocked Intrepido in 51 seconds, and was unconcerned about the time.
“It was a nice easy breeze,” Mullins said. “The horse has two one-mile wins under his belt. He beat some of the best 2-year-olds on the grounds.
“I don’t think he’ll gain anything going around there in 46 and change.”
Mullins said that Intrepido worked in the middle of the track “staying off that deep rail.”
“He’ll breeze again a week from today and then showtime.”
