Hey Mamaluke wires Penn's Landing at 5-1 under apprentice Andy Hernandez

Hey Mamaluke was quicker than Jakarta, opened an insurmountable lead, and then held the favorite at bay despite drifting out considerably in the Penn's Landing Stakes for fillies and mares at 6 1/2 furlongs on Monday at Parx.
The Penn’s Landing was one of three $100,000 stakes on the 11-race program along with the Washington Crossing for 4-year-olds and up at a mile and 70 yards and the Fishtown for 4-year-olds and up at six furlongs.
Trained by Patricia Farro, 6-year-old Hey Mamaluke won her seasonal debut at Aqueduct on Feb. 24 when entered for an $80,000 optional claiming price. She was ridden in that race and on Monday by apprentice Andy Hernandez.
Sent away as the 5-1 third choice in the seven-horse Penn's Landing, Hey Mamaluke ($12.60) was asked for run from the start and set fractions of 22.17 and 44.66 seconds.
Jakarta, the 7-10 favorite based on graded-stakes placings in her first two starts of the year, lost ground late on the backstretch and appeared to be going nowhere fast. She eventually found her stride turning for home, but Hay Mamaluke was home free at that juncture.
Despite bearing out several paths in the final eighth, Hey Mamaluke held it together to prevail by two lengths over Jakarta in 1:18.42. Glory Dia was another half-length back in third. Then came, Cinnabunny, Shero, Precious, and Discreetly Tough. Bess, Club Car, and I’m the Talent scratched.

Hey Mamaluke is a homebred daughter of Jump Start owned by Joseph Capriglione. She had previously captured the Power By Far Stakes for Pennsylvania-breds at five furlongs in 2021. Hey Mamaluke has won nine races from 24 starts and is 8 for 18 at Parx.
Washington Crossing Stakes
Bird King earned the first stakes win of his career when rallying from off the pace to post a four-length victory in the Washington Crossing.
Ridden by Angel Castillo, Bird King settled in fourth position along the inside as Splicethemainbrace and favored Dreams Untold carved out fractions of 23.46 and 47.20 seconds.
Dreams Untold moved best on the second turn and wrested a short lead from his pace rival, but Bird King had built up a head of steam and kicked past them both on the outside.
Bird King, trained by Michael Pino for owner Gregory Carlevale, completed the distance in 1:43.52 and returned $7.80 as the second choice. Dreams Untold was second, a length better than Splicethemainbrace. Then came Kingsville, Souper Fly Over and New Commission.
The disappointments were 10-year-old Backsideofthemoon and 2020 Grade 2 Remsen Stakes winner Brooklyn Strong. Neither showed much interest and finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Halite and Irish Honor scratched.
Bird King is a 5-year-old gelded son of Tiznow bred by Marylou Whitney Stables. He was claimed by Pino for $50,000 out of his career debut in 2019.
Fishtown Stakes
Hollywood Jet showed easy speed from the far outside post, cleared to the lead and the rail under Luis Ocasio and fended off several challenges to land the Fishtown.
Claimed for $12,500 at Parx last March, Hollywood Jet has won six of nine starts for trainer Carlos Milian. The Fishtown was Hollywood Jet’s fifth consecutive victory. He hasn’t been headed in any of those races.
The 7-5 favorite, Hollywood Jet broke like a shot and wound up in front after a swift opening quarter in 21.77 seconds.
Uncle Ernie, the 7-2 second choice, took a good run at Hollywood Jet on the turn and the pair swung into the stretch together after a half-mile clocking of 44.49.
Hollywood Jet ($4.80) dispatched Uncle Ernie, then held rail-skimming Sir Alfred James safe to win by a half-length in 1:10.14.
It was another 1 1/4 lengths to Uncle Ernie in third. They were followed by Mojovation, Prince of Rain, Fortheluvofbourbon, Midnightcharly, Bybee, and Breezy Gust. Our Philly Special and Smooth B scratched.
The Fishtown was the stakes debut for Hollywood Jet, a 4-year-old gelding by Uncaptured out of multiple stakes-winner Travelator.
