Hersh: How I'll play Gulfstream for Saturday, Dec. 16
A fine multi-stakes card on Saturday at Gulfstream Park. Here’s how I’ll play it.
Race 5
Curlins Approval (#1) has a great Gulfstream record and is the most accomplished horse in the Rampart. She’s also at a distance longer than ideal, back in action fairly soon after a trip to Del Mar for the Breeders’ Cup, and stuck with a potentially tricky post on the rail. She could win, but I think there’s enough of a chance for her even to run outside the top three that I’ll play the race against her. Lewis Bay (#3) will assuredly be shorter than 7-2, but I’ll try to leverage her to win some money in the trifecta or exacta.
Total investment = $30
$3 trifecta 3 with 5,6 with 2,5,6,7 ($18)
$6 exacta 3 with 2,7 ($12)
Race 6
Personal Time (#5) is a DRF GamePlan Playbook play for me. His first race in my opinion was pure practice. That it happened to come against one of the sharpest 2-year-old maiden winners of 2016 makes his performance look worse than it was. I’ll bet him to win and underneath in exactas and trifectas.
Total investment = $79.50
$30 win 5
$15 exacta 3 with 5
$8 exacta 10 with 5
$6 exacta 7 with 5
$5 exacta 2 with 5
$3 exacta 4,9 with 5
50-cent trifecta 3,7,10 with 2,3,4,7,9,10 with 5 ($7.50)
$1 trifecta 3 with 2,4,7,9,10 with 5 ($5)
