ARCADIA, Calif. - Jockey Juan Hernandez recorded his first five-win day at Santa Anita on Saturday, the third time he achieved that mark in his career and the first time he won four stakes on a single day. There could be more milestones in 2022 for Hernandez, the leading rider at the track’s winter-spring meeting. Hernandez won five races on a single day at Golden Gate Fields in 2018 and 2019. The Saturday program was his best afternoon since he relocated from Northern California in 2020. “It feels really nice,” Hernandez reflected on Sunday morning. “I rode nice horses. We did it. The horses helped me a lot.” Through Saturday, the 30-year-old Hernandez has won 87 races at the winter-spring meeting, well clear of Flavien Prat, who was second with 72. The order has reversed since Prat left to ride in Kentucky in early April and now at Belmont Park. On April 3, Prat had 72 wins, while Hernandez was second with 53. :: Win big at Santa Anita: Get DRF Past Performances, Picks, Clocker Reports and Betting Strategies.  Hernandez’s recent dominance has given him a choice list of mounts, evidenced by his success on Saturday when five stakes were run, all for statebreds. Hernandez won the $100,000 Crystal Water Stakes on Carmelita’s Man ($4.80), and the $100,000 Thor’s Echo Stakes on Desmond Doss ($10) early in the day. He swept the final two races, both stakes, winning the $150,500 Melair Stakes with Big Switch ($3.40) and the $101,000 Fran’s Valentine Stakes on Alice Marble ($3). The win on Alice Marble was the most remarkable of the four. Although strongly favored, Alice Marble was stuck on the rail on the turn behind a fading rival. Hernandez was able to move the 5-year-old mare to the outside near the quarter-pole. Alice Marble rallied between horses to win the one-mile turf race by three-quarters of a length. Hernandez said that race strategy changed at the start when Alice Marble broke slower than expected. “I missed the break,” he said. “I decided to stay behind the pace. At the half-mile pole, I had room to go. I decided to wait. It was too soon to make that move.” Hernandez may have questioned his conservative plan when the field was midway on the turn. As soon as the situation looked hopeless, Hernandez had Alice Marble in the clear and able to move forward. “I had a rough trip from the half-mile pole to the quarter-pole,” he said. “I was patient. I knew my filly would finish.” With Prat’s absence, Hernandez is well on his way to a first-ever riding title at Santa Anita. Since his relocation in 2020, Hernandez has won one riding title at Del Mar, at the 2021 autumn meeting. He was second to Prat in three consecutive meetings at Santa Anita - the autumn of 2020, the winter-spring of 2020-2021 and the autumn of 2021. Last summer at Del Mar, Prat won the title with 50 wins, while Hernandez was second with 29. This summer, with Prat scheduled to ride at Saratoga, Hernandez is in an ideal position to win his first Del Mar summer meeting title. “You want to be one of the top riders,” Hernandez said. “Hopefully, I can keep it going. Del Mar is like Santa Anita. It’s one of the best tracks in the USA.” Hernandez’s four stakes winners from Saturday are likely to race at the Los Alamitos summer meeting or at Del Mar. Carmelita’s Man, who won his stakes debut in the Crystal Water Stakes at a mile on turf, is likely to have his next start in the $150,000 California Dreamin’ Stakes for statebreds at 1 1/16 miles on turf at Del Mar. A 5-year-old gelding, Carmelita’s Man has won 5 of 18 starts and earned $276,528 for owners Larry and Ann Jett and trainer Dean Pederson. Desmond Doss, who races for owner and breeder Nick Alexander and trainer Steve Miyadi, could return for the $100,000 Bertrando Stakes at a mile for statebreds at Los Alamitos on June 25. Desmond Doss won the 2021 Bertrando last June. Big Switch won her second stakes in the Melair, but her first at 1 1/16 miles. She is a candidate for the $175,000 Fleet Treat Stakes for 3-year-old statebred fillies at seven furlongs at Del Mar on July 28. Big Switch, who races for owner and breeder George Krikorian and trainer John Sadler, won the Golden State Juvenile Fillies at seven furlongs at Del Mar last November. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports Alice Marble, trained by Phil D’Amato for Alexander, is likely to run in the $150,000 Solana Beach Stakes for statebred fillies and mares at a mile on turf on Aug. 21. The Fran’s Valentine was Alice Marble’s first start beyond a sprint, and her fifth win in 11 starts. The trouble Alice Marble encountered had D’Amato expecting a loss while watching the race. “By midstretch, I was hoping she’d run second,” D’Amato said. “It’s vindication that she ran to her ability. The thing about Juan is that he persevered.” Bally’s Charm won Saturday’s $150,500 Snow Chief Stakes for statebred 3-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles on turf by leading throughout under jockey Jessica Pyfer. For Pyfer, 24, the champion apprentice jockey of 2021, the Snow Chief was the first stakes win of her career, which began in September 2020. Pyfer has ridden Bally’s Charm in all six of his starts, which includes three wins. Trainer Jeff Mullins said longer races are likely for Bally’s Charm, who races for Red Baron’s Barn and Alan and Bonnie Cummins. “I don’t think he’ll have any distance limitations,” Mullins said.
