Juan Hernandez and Antonio Fresu, second and fifth in the jockey standings at Santa Anita through Thursday, will ride briefly at Keeneland next month. Last spring, Hernandez won two races from nine mounts at Keeneland during a week Santa Anita did not conduct racing. “We went last year and we did pretty good,” Hernandez said recently. “We’re trying to ride a couple of horses a day. “It’s good racing and good horses and good competition. Hopefully I can get some decent mounts.” :: Santa Anita Classic Meet! Get DRF Past Performances, Clocker Reports, and more. The current Santa Anita winter-spring meeting runs through April 5. The spring meeting begins on April 17. The upcoming Keeneland spring meeting runs from April 3 to 24. Hernandez will ride at Santa Anita through April 5, and at Keeneland from April 8-18, according to his agent, Craig O’Bryan. Hernandez is expected to return to Kentucky to ride Kentucky Derby week at Churchill Downs from April 28 to May 2. Last spring, Hernandez won four races from 15 mounts that week, including two stakes. Fresu will ride at Keeneland for the first time this year. Through Thursday, Emisael Jaramillo led the jockey standings at Santa Anita with 38 wins, four more than Hernandez and Kazushi Kimura. Armando Ayuso ranked fourth with 29 wins, while Fresu was fifth with 19. Fresu’s position is all the more impressive considering he missed six weeks of racing from late December to early February because of a foot injury. This month, Fresu has won 13 races from 40 mounts through Thursday. Jaramillo, who relocated from Gulfstream Park to Santa Anita in December, will remain in California in April, and will spend most of the time between Santa Anita meetings working horses, according to his agent, Tom Knust. The long-range focus is to build business for the Del Mar summer meeting. “We’re not going to go anywhere,” Knust said. “If there was a stakes, we would probably go for the day. “I thought it would be better to stay here and work horses and concentrate on Del Mar. That’s kind of our game plan.” Jaramillo has never ridden on a full-time basis at Del Mar. In his only mount at the track, Jaramillo finished 11th aboard Watchatalkinabout in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint last November. Ayuso and Kimura did not have travel plans for April as of Thursday, their agents said on Friday. Ayuso, for one, has already exceeded his win total from the 2024-2025 winter-spring meeting when he won 26 races. The goal for the spring meeting that runs from April 17 to June 14 is a riding title. “We’re staying and trying to win the next meet,” said his agent, Mike Ciani. Jaramillo has an excellent chance to add to his lead this weekend at Santa Anita. From Friday through Sunday, he has 24 mounts, including all nine races on Friday. Hernandez is riding at Oaklawn Park on Friday and has 12 mounts at Santa Anita on Saturday and Sunday. Fresu has 14 mounts at Santa Anita on Friday and Sunday and is riding at Oaklawn Park on Saturday. Ayuso has 20 mounts at Santa Anita over the three days, while Kimura has 16. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
