Here's Hannah gets another shot at Under Par

Here's Hannah wins the 2019 Monashee Handicap
Four-Footed Fotos Here's Hannah drew off to win the Monashee Handicap by four lengths.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Here’s Hannah will try to make amends for her loss as the chalk in the $50,000 Monashee when she runs in a conditioned allowance race that carries a top claiming price of $62,500 on Sunday at Hastings.

With the right trip, Here’s Hannah should be tough to handle in the 6 1/2-furlong sprint for fillies and mares, which drew six horses. It goes as race 5 on an eight-race card that begins at 4:30 p.m Pacific.

Here’s Hannah, trained by John Morrison, suffered just the third loss of her 15-race career in the Monashee. The 2019 Sovereign Award winner as the top older filly or mare in Canada, Here’s Hannah had a big excuse, though. With Enrique Gonzalez riding her for the first time, Here’s Hannah broke alertly from the inside post but was eased back to try and stalk Under Par in the 6 1/2-furlong dash. Sunburst moved outside of her, and Here’s Hannah got stuck on the rail behind Under Par and Sunburst. She had a lot to do after Under Par posted a very slow half-mile time of 46.06 seconds.

Here’s Hannah finally got off the rail in midstretch, but the damage was done, and she could not catch Under Par, who kept rolling to edge Here’s Hannah by three-quarters of a length.

Here’s Hannah gets off the rail Sunday and should get a better trip breaking from post 4 with Scott Williams replacing Gonzalez, who is serving a suspension for careless riding.

Under Par is certainly no slouch. Trained by Mark Cloutier, she has just one way of going and has used her substantial speed to compile an enviable 10-4-1-record from 16 starts. The only time she finished worse than third was in her final start in 2019 in the $56,000 Founders Distaff Handicap at Century Downs. She may have been over the top after traveling from Century Mile in Edmonton, Alberta, to Emerald Downs in Auburn, Wash., and then back to Calgary for the Distaff.

She’s a sharp horse right now, though, and once again will be the one they have to run down. Jose Gomez picks up the mount on Under Par, who will break from post 2.

Amadeo Perez is the main rider for Cloutier, and he rode Under Par in the Monashee, but he bailed to ride Butterscotch Blend, who is a bit overmatched Sunday. Cloutier said he is letting Perez ride Butterscotch Blend on Sunday because he is going to ride her in the Sept. 5 CTHS Sales Stakes. Also, Cloutier said, Gomez deserves a chance to ride a horse like Under Par.

“Jose is a good rider but doesn’t get a lot of quality mounts,” Cloutier said. “He does a lot of work for us, and I am happy to give him a shot.”

Trained by Robert Gilker, Butterscotch Blend won the $50,000 CTHS Sales Stakes for 3- and 4 year-old fillies last year.

If Here’s Hannah and Under Par get carried away up front, the race could set up Amazonian, who is making her first start since she finished third to Here’s Hannah in the Grade 3 Ballerina on Sept 28.

Trained by Glen Todd, Amazonian went into the Ballerina off a win in the $100,000 British Columbia Oaks.
