Henro became a stakes winner in his two-turn debut Saturday night when he caught Just a Touch on the wire for a head victory in the $250,000 Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows. It was another 3 1/4 lengths back in third to Northern Flame. The Iowa Derby was part of the $1.2 million Iowa Festival of Racing. There were eight Thoroughbred stakes making up the series that ran from Friday night to Saturday’s card of four stakes worth a total of $875,000. Henro ($11.60), who in his career debut caught eventual Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan, was stretching out around two turns off a runner-up finish in an allowance sprint at Churchill Downs. He settled along the rail Saturday, as Northern Flame set fractions of 23.89 seconds for the opening quarter and 47.61 for the half-mile. (There was a timing malfunction and the race was “retimed using video technology,” according to the chart.) Chris Hartman trains Henro, who earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 96. Henro began his career with a sixth-place finish to Mystik Dan in a maiden special weight at Churchill, and one start later graduated at Oaklawn. Henro is a son of Collected and a half-brother to Grade 1 winner and millionaire Street Band. Henro races for the partnership of JD Thoroughbreds and Joey Keith Davis. He has now won 3 of 7 starts for earnings of $337,439. Iowa Oaks Just Basking became a stakes winner when she closed from last for a 4 3/4-length win over Just Be Quiet in the $225,000 Iowa Oaks. Shimmering Allure, who was the odds-on favorite after winning the local prep, never had a clear run from her rail post and finished fourth. Just Basking ($5.60) settled off contested fractions of 23.72 seconds for the opening quarter, 47.88 for the half-mile and 1:12.87 for six furlongs. The eventual winner went on to cover the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.80. (The race was “retimed using video technology” after a timing malfunction, according to the chart.) Chris Landeros rode Just Basking for trainer Ian Wilkes. The winner earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 90. Just Baking is a daughter of Arrogate. She is from the female family of Belmont Stakes winner Sir Winston. Just Basking races for her breeders, Gilder-Schwarz Farm. She has now won 2 of 5 starts and earned $239,500. White Sands bests boys White Sands ran her record to 2 for 2 when the half-sister to champion Jackie’s Warrior defeated male rivals in the $100,000 Prairie Gold Juvenile. She rolled by 13 3/4 lengths over Maverama, while it was another neck back in third to Jet Sweep Joe. White Sands ($5.20) set fractions of 22.28 for the opening quarter and 45.18 for the half-mile before finishing the 5 1/2-furlong race in 1:04.18. She earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 72. Joe Bravo was aboard for trainer Wesley Ward. White Sands is a daughter of Into Mischief who races for Mrs. John Magnier and Mrs. Paul Shanahan.
