Hennig pointing Gun Song to Mother Goose

Barbara D. Livingston Black-Eyed Susan winner Gun Song is pointing toward the Mother Goose at Aqueduct.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Gun Song, who came within a neck of upsetting Thorpedo Anna in the Grade 1 Cotillion Stakes on Sept. 21 at Parx Racing, is pointing to the Grade 2, $250,000 Mother Goose on Oct. 26 at Aqueduct, trainer Mark Hennig said.

On Friday at Belmont, Gun Song worked a half-mile in 49 seconds over the training track.

“Just kind of a first work back kind of thing, hopefully come back next week and do a little more, but she’s pretty fit right now,” Hennig said.

Gun Song, who won the Black-Eyed Susan at Pimlico in May and the Cathryn Sophia at Parx in August, ran a tremendous race in the Cotillion, fighting with Thorpedo Anna through the lane before yielding grudgingly late.

“I thought she ran super,” Hennig said. “Johnny [Velazquez], always the professional he is, was second-guessing whether he should have gone to the left-handed stick earlier because he said she responded so well to it. . . . It’s a credit just to finish that close to” Thorpedo Anna.

Hennig said the Mother Goose would be the last start of the year for Gun Song, who will run in 2025.

Wild Mama, a two-length debut winner for Hennig at Sept. 15, worked five furlongs in 1:01.24. Hennig said Wild Mama could be pointed to the $150,000 Tempted Stakes on Nov. 2.

No Breeders’ Cup for Our Shot

Our Shot, winner the Grade 2 Woodford Stakes on Oct. 5 at Keeneland, will not be pointed to the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint because he is not Breeders’ Cup nominated, trainer John Terranova said Friday.

Our Shot will be pointed to a 6-year-old campaign in 2025 and could run in a turf sprint stakes at Gulfstream in January or one at Tampa Bay in February, Terranova said.

Terranova said one of his main objectives in 2025 for Our Shot is the Grade 1 Jaipur, typically run the week of the Belmont Stakes, which will be held again in Saratoga.
