Hen Party is a filly still obviously working to put things together, but is still obviously talented. Despite still showing some greenness in the stretch, she powered clear for a two-length win in Saturday’s $125,000 Serena’s Song Stakes for 3-year-old fillies sprinting, the closing-night feature at Turfway Park, putting her in good stead to keep improving into the spring and summer. Hen Party ($8.62), with Walter Rodriguez in the irons, was fourth at the quarter pole, just more than a length back of favored Cadenza, who had defeated her last out. Cadenza, after attending the pace, had stuck a head in front of Blue Flame Six into the stretch. Hen Party, outside of foes, attempted to lug in near the eighth pole as Cadenza opened a length lead. Still, Hen Party had enough to surge clear through to the wire, stopping the clock in 1:09.51 for the six furlongs. Cadenza, who, like Hen Party, was making her stakes debut, was second by 1 1/2 lengths, clearly best of the rest. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Rodriguez earned a sweep of the titles this season at Turfway, which officially divides its four-month stand on the Kentucky circuit into two meets – the holiday meet in December, and the winter-spring meet, which ran Jan. 1 through March 28. Rodriguez also took the riding title over Machado, 26 wins to 13, for the December holiday meet. The winter-spring meet training title went to Mike Maker, 18-17, over Brad Cox, who trains Cadenza. Hen Party, a Godolphin homebred trained by Eoin Harty, was making her fourth career start in the Serena’s Song. She won her debut last October on Presque Isle’s Tapeta, becoming green in the late stages but already clear en route to a 5 3/4-length win. In her next start, her inexperience undid her, as she was fractious in the gate, broke late, and trailed throughout a turf sprint at Indiana. She put in a more complete effort in an allowance on Feb. 21 at Turfway, in which she was a closing second to Cadenza. Finishing third that day was Lorelei Lee – trained by Maker – who went on to win the Bourbonette Oaks on March 21 and is now en route to the Kentucky Oaks. Hen Party had earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 82 for that allowance runner-up effort, and improved to a career-best 86 in winning the Serena’s Song. She is a May foal, which suggests continued development could be in the offing, and she has a high-class pedigree that suggests a change in surface, or added distance, might not be farfetched. The daughter of leading sire Into Mischief is out of Fair Maiden, winner of the Grade 1 La Brea around one turn on dirt. Fair Maiden is the dam of Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club winner First Resort, and this is the extended family of Kentucky Oaks winner Secret Status, who produced classic-placed Dunkirk. With Turfway concluding its meet, the Kentucky circuit now moves to Keeneland, which opens its spring meet on Friday, April 3, and then to Churchill Downs on Saturday, April 25. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
