OPELOUSAS, La. – Some short fields and even shorter prices populate the Louisiana Legends Night program Saturday at Evangeline Downs, but there also are some deep races that should provide plenty of handicapping challenges. The 12-race program consisting entirely of Louisiana-breds starts at 5:40 p.m. Central. The presence of proven graded stakes performers Heitai and String King discouraged many challengers in the Legends Sprint and Turf. Their significant class advantage should carry the day for each, and their followers can expect even-money or less. Diego Saenz will ride Heitai for trainer Tom Amoss, while owner, trainer, and breeder Charlie Smith has once again given the call on String King to Richard Eramia. Similarly, in the $125,000 Legends Classic, Stormdriver will face just six rivals off the strength of a win in the John Henry Stakes this season and, most recently, a second-place finish to California shipper Mystery Train in the 100,000 Evangeline Mile. Both of those efforts came against open company, and the return to the statebred ranks Saturday virtually guarantees a short price. Saenz rides for trainer Pat Devereux Jr. The remaining stakes events on the card promise many more wagering options, beginning with the $100,000 Legends Soiree for 3-year-old fillies at a mile on turf. No fewer than half of the 10 fillies are stakes winners or stakes-placed, and of the remaining five runners, three have won on grass. Pacific Pink could rule a slight favorite off an optional-claiming score over the Fair Grounds turf earlier in the year as well as a win in the Crescent City Oaks over the Fair Grounds main track in late March. In her lone local start this year, the daughter of Private Vow narrowly missed in an optional claimer that was rained off the turf. Trainer Eddie Johnston will give leading rider Colby Hernandez a leg up. :: Bet the Louisiana Legends card with DRF Bets. Get up to a $500 cash bonus! Find out more today. Snappy Girl, third to Heitai while facing male opponents and open company in last year’s $300,000 Evangeline Turf Sprint, will attempt to recapture some of that form in the $100,000 Legends Mademoiselle for filly-and-mare sprinters. The Karl Broberg charge is winless in seven starts since winning an allowance turf sprint at Remington last August. Hernandez will ride last year’s Mademoiselle winner. Afternoon Tango, fifth to Snappy Girl in the Mademoiselle a year ago, appears to be headed into this season’s edition in top form. The 5-year-old daughter of Afternoon Deelites defeated open company in convincing fashion in an optional claimer five weeks ago. Devereux and Saenz once again team up. Tee Brown, who has compiled a 2-1-2 record in seven starts while facing exclusively Louisiana-bred company, has been installed as the 5-2 favorite as he makes his stakes debut in the Legends Cheval against fellow 3-year-olds on turf. The Al Stall Jr. trainee recently finished third to Old Pal of Mine in an optional claimer in mid-May in his first start against older company. Old Pal of Mine is likely to be the second choice in the wagering behind String King in the Legends Turf later in the program. The Legends Distaff promises to be another competitive affair and is headed up by Slew City Lou, who has finished no worse than second in her last three while facing open company each time. Another Pinot, a winner of both of her starts against statebred allowance foes at the meeting, also merits consideration. Roberto Morales will ride Slew City Lou for trainer Bret Calhoun, while Saenz rides Another Pinot for Andy Leggio.
