ARCADIA, Calif. – The $2 pick six, frequently overshadowed by lower-cost bets such as the 50-cent pick four and 50-cent pick five, will be the focus of Thursday’s eight-race program at Santa Anita.

The two-day carryover of $339,082 from Sunday in the main pick six pool is too significant to ignore. In addition, there is a carryover of $245,751 in the single-ticket jackpot portion of the pool, paid only if there is one winning ticket. The pool of new money should surpass $1.2 million.

The pick six covers the third through eighth races on a program that begins at noon, Pacific. The pick six races include four races on dirt, three of which are sprints, and two races on turf.

Third race

With six runners, this $16,000 claimer at 1 1/16 miles is the smallest field on the program.

I’ll Wrap It Up, sixth in a $20,000 claimer at 1 1/16 miles on March 16, takes a slight drop in class for his second start since late July. I’ll Wrap It Up could show speed, and must hold off a late threat from City Steel, who won a $10,000 claimer at a mile on a wet-fast track on March 3.

Fourth race

Avail is well drawn to win her first start for trainer Brian Koriner in a starter allowance for fillies and mares at six furlongs that drew seven entrants. Avail was claimed for $40,000 when third in a seven-furlong race on March 16, her first start since November.

Trainer Richard Baltas, who through Sunday was third with 28 wins at the meeting, has a formidable starter in Tiny Tina, the winner of a $30,000 claiming race for maidens at six furlongs on Jan. 28. On March 9, Tiny Tina closed from ninth in a field of 11 to finish second in a starter allowance at 6 1/2 furlongs.

Fifth race

A $50,000 claiming race for maidens on the hillside turf course, race 5 drew 14 entrants, but will have 10 starters.

California Breeze, third in a maiden special weight on the hillside turf course on Feb. 18, will attract support, along with Diva La Mousse and Foxtail, who were second and fourth in a $50,000 claimer for maidens on the hillside on Feb. 4.

Himmah, trained by Mark Glatt, can show improvement in her second U.S. start. An import from Ireland last fall, Himmah was seventh after a slow start in a productive maiden race in her American debut on Dec. 30. Classy Atlantic and Hope Wins finished second and third in that race and each won his next start.

Sixth race

Where’s the D is the only last-race winner in this field of eight fillies and mares in an $8,000 claimer at six furlongs. Where’s the D won an $8,000 claimer at a mile on March 18, ending a seven-race losing streak. The 5-year-old mare will be ridden by Efrain Hernandez in his first mount since being unseated in a spill at Los Alamitos on March 24.

Foxy Fresh merits attention. She is likely to be part of the pace following a fifth-place finish in a $16,000 claimer for non-winners of three at 5 1/2 furlongs on March 9.

Seventh race

The 5-year-old mare My Aunt Tillie is a different racehorse this year than in 2016 and 2017, when she was winless in nine starts. A layoff of more than seven months and an operation to aid her breathing have been the difference, trainer Mike Puype said.

“She came back a better horse,” he said. “We did a throat surgery.”

My Aunt Tillie is part of an allowance race at a mile on turf for California-bred fillies and mares. In a similar race on March 9, My Aunt Tillie closed fast after being last of 10 early and finished second.

My Aunt Tillie will be reliant on a quick pace to develop from runners such as Batiquitos, Dreamy Gal, Lostintranzlation, and X S Gold.

“This race has a lot of speed,” Puype said. “She’ll need luck.”

Eighth race

The program ends with a maiden race for California-breds at six furlongs.

In a field of 11, leading riders Evin Roman (Flynn) and Flavien Prat (Leroy) ride first-time starters.

Flynn, trained by Steve Miyadi, had two quick gate works in March. Leroy, trained by Phil Oviedo, had two solid gate works in the second half of March.
