ARCADIA, Calif. – After saddling longshot winners in two sprint stakes on Saturday, trainer Mark Glatt goes chalky Friday at Santa Anita. Glatt entered four low-odds runners in the wake of two Saturday upsets. Howbeit ($14.40) won the Grade 2 Santa Anita Sprint Championship. Whatmakessammyrun ($38) won the Grade 2 Eddie D. Howbeit is not nominated to the Breeders’ Cup and will pass the BC Sprint, but Eddie D winner Whatmakessammyrun is under consideration for the BC Turf Sprint by Glatt and owner Sam Hershberger. Meanwhile on Friday, every Glatt starter is a contender. All Eyes West is the likely pacesetter in race 2, a claiming sprint; Flame McGoon should win race 3, a starter allowance turf sprint; Leyas Candy is the one to beat in race 8, a California-bred allowance sprint; and Americaredwhiteblu switches surfaces as the likely favorite in race 9, a starter allowance turf mile. Glatt has never won four on one card, but he has won four races in one day. It happened Oct. 26, 2019, when he won three at Santa Anita and one at Keeneland. Winning three on one card is no big deal for Glatt, who has at least 11 three-baggers in his career, including his most recent Aug. 13 at Del Mar. Race-2 starter All Eyes West runs 6 1/2 furlongs for a $20,000 claiming tag in his second start following a layoff. The gelding benefits by a tepid pace scenario and could wire the field under Diego Herrera. Established, trained by Tim Yakteen, is likely to start favored based on his last-out runner-up finish. :: Get ready for Santa Anita racing with DRF PPs, Clocker Reports, Picks, and more. Flame McGoon was shuffled early, lost ground rallying wide, and missed by a length. Ryan Curatolo rides Flame McGoon, whose rivals in the nonwinners-of-two starter allowance include Va Va Voom, Twentyseventrouts, and Cause She’s a Lady. Race-8 starter Leyas Candy meets California-bred allowance winners following a sharp maiden win in his fourth start, and first with blinkers. “He was wanting to miss the break just a hair,” Glatt said. “We stuck a little blinker on him, he had an outside post, and beat the gate. “He’s a horse I didn’t think would be a maiden as long as he was. He had a little bit of trouble in the race prior and also ran into a good horse that day [winner Thorne House].” Leyas Candy, who Glatt expects will stretch out eventually, will be ridden again by Juan Hernandez. His rivals include Midnight Special and Quick Finish. Race-9 starter Americaredwhiteblu, who dominated a starter allowance dirt mile last out, will switch to turf. “I don’t usually like changing up off good current form, but he’s bred top and bottom to like the grass,” Glatt said. Abel Cedillo rides the American Pharoah colt, whose dam is by Hard Spun. Americaredwhiteblu’s main rival is Fort Moultrie. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
