Heavy Breathing’s initial stud fee set at $2,500

DRF Breeding Staff|Nov 19, 2013

Heavy Breathing, a Grade 3-placed winner and a full brother to young New York sire Frost Giant, will stand his initial breeding season at Dutchess View Farm in Pine Plains, N.Y. for an advertised fee of $2,500.

Dutchess View announced in July that it would stand the 4-year-old son of Giant’s Causeway.

Heavy Breathing was an early contender on the 2012 Kentucky Derby trail, finishing third in the Grade 3 Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park, after winning his first two career starts at Gulfstream Park. Later in the season, he finished second in the Lamplighter Stakes at Monmouth Park.

Heavy Breathing retired with two wins in seven starts for earnings of $124,441 for Starlight Stables and trainer Todd Pletcher. He will stand in New York for a partnership including Andrew Cohen’s Sunset Stables, Gary Tolchin’s Golden Goose Enterprises, and Well Found Management.

The horse is out of Gone West mare Takesmybreathaway, who is the dam of six winners from eight foals to race, including Grade 1 winner Frost Giant, who has become a breakout young sire in New York, and is owned by Cohen.

His notable family members also include champion Rhythm, standout sires Not For Love and Mutakddim, Group 2 winner Kavanagh, and Grade/Group 3 winners Get Lucky, Sea Chanter, Pacific Ocean, Oregon Lady, and Playwright.

“We are very excited about the future with Heavy Breathing,” said Eric Bishop, who manages Frost Giant’s career for Cohen’s Sunset Stables and will manage Heavy Breathing for the partnership. “We want to provide New York breeders with a great chance to access this bloodline, which clearly has worked so well in New York, at a very attractive level.”
