ARCADIA, Calif. – Bob Baffert was being facetious after post positions were drawn for the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes on Sunday at Santa Anita. “I can’t believe I drew the one-hole,” he cracked. Given that Baffert trains four of the five San Vicente entrants, one of them was likely to get stuck inside. At least the post draw adds drama to the seven-furlong race, because the horse mired on the rail happens to be the likely favorite. Havnameltdown, a two-time graded winner whose lone defeat was a second-place finish in a Grade 1, is the horse to catch. Sure, the rail could get him beat Sunday. But if Havnameltdown loses the San Vicente, the likely reason is getting outrun by a stablemate who is simply better. :: Get ready for Santa Anita racing with DRF Past Performances, Picks, and Clocker Reports.  Faustin, impressive debut winner one month ago, will give Havnameltdown all he can handle in the San Vicente, race 2 on Sunday. Baffert also starts front-running maiden sprint winner Fort Warren and two-turn maiden winner Gilmore. Ryan Hanson trains stakes-placed Man Child, the longest shot in the five-runner field. The San Vicente is the first and probably last time Baffert will start Havnameltdown and Faustin in the same race. “They all want to go long except Havnameltdown,” Baffert said. “He’s a really fast horse. He’s very, very aggressive.” Havnameltdown is so fast Baffert does not work him in company. “Certain horses, aggressive horses, you work them by their self or they’re going to do too much,” he said. Juan Hernandez rides Havnameltdown, whose Grade 3 sprint wins at Del Mar in the Best Pal and Bob Hope are sandwiched around a runner-up finish to stablemate Cave Rock in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity. Baffert will consider shipping Havnameltdown with Speed Boat Beach to Saudi Arabia for the $1.5 million Saudi Derby on Feb. 25. They would accompany Baffert’s candidates for the $20 million Saudi Cup – Taiba and Country Grammer. Faustin is the main threat to Havnameltdown in the San Vicente. Baffert said Faustin changed following his come-from-behind maiden win at six furlongs. “That race has really woken him up,” Baffert said. “He’s the kind of horse a 10-year-old could ride. He’s quiet, chill.” But when Faustin works in company, he turns it on. “He worked with Arabian Knight and hung with him the whole way,” Baffert said. “He’s not going to work well by himself. He needs competition.” Arabian Knight and Faustin received the same time of 59.20 seconds for that Jan. 21 work. Arabian Knight was the early favorite Saturday in the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park. Ramon Vazquez rides Faustin, who Baffert expects will improve further when he stretches to two turns. He also believes San Vicente entrants Fort Warren and Gilmore will prefer two turns. Fort Warren in October won his only start over Spun Intended, who won next out by more than six lengths before he was injured in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes. Gilmore won a maiden route last out over Roll On Big Joe, who won his next start by more than 14 lengths at Gulfstream Park. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
