HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Haulin Ice became the first Arkansas-bred to surpass $1 million in career earnings on Friday, cruising home by 11 3/4  lengths over Caliente Star to win the $150,000 Downthedustyroad Breeders’ Stakes at Oaklawn Park. It was another half-length back in third to Ms Carroll County. The Downthedustyroad was a six-furlong race for fillies and mares bred in Arkansas. Haulin Ice won for the second year in a row. A multiple Grade 3 winner, Haulin Ice is the all-time leading Arkansas-bred by earnings. She came into the Downthedustyroad with a bankroll of $998,250 and, after wiring her rivals, pushed her career mark to $1,081,500. She is now 11 for 20. Haulin Ice ($2.40) took quick command of the Downthedustyroad, moving to the lead with ease and racing uncontested through fractions of 22.23 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 45.08 for the half. She went on to cover the distance in a blazing 1:08.75, winning in hand on a fast track. Francisco Arrieta was aboard for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. :: Live racing action at Oaklawn Park! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. Haulin Ice shipped in Monday from South Florida. Joseph said she would go back home and, provided she is doing well, will return to Oaklawn for the $250,000 Matron on March 27. She won the open company sprint last season. Haulin Ice had been intended for a start in a local allowance ahead of this year’s Downthedustyroad, but the race did not fill. She instead made her turf debut and was second by a neck in a stakes in December at Gulfstream Park. “How she ran on the turf was quite extraordinary because the allowance race didn’t go, and then I kind of was just giving her a little freshener,” Joseph said. “I only worked her once and she ran so big. After that, we had time for this race. This was always the plan for the second race she was going to have. After these two races, the turf is going to be a very, very big option this year.” Haulin Ice is a daughter of Coal Front who will take home her second consecutive trophy as Arkansas-bred of the Year on April 3 at the Arkansas Thoroughbred Breeders' and Horsemen’s Association banquet in the event center at Oaklawn. She earned $550,900 last year to top all Arkansas-breds in earnings for 2025, according to statistics provided by the ATBHA. Haulin Ice was bred by Eugenia Thompson-Benight. She is owned by C2 Racing Stable and new partners WSS Racing and Agave Racing Stable. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
